The Doobie Brothers' career is best be divided into two camps. The band originally started out as a good-time party band, as their name implies, churning out a string of rock hits like "Jesus Is Just ...

Hm. I'd never classify Jewel as "rock". Fluffy pop, maybe.

U2's version of Woody Guthrie's Jesus Christ ought to be sung in every church in North America every Sunday. A great socio political message song from one of history's best socio political writers.

Velvet Underground's Jesus - as personal a prayer as anyone could ever hope to write.

Jesus Just Left Chicago by ZZ Top - I don't know if it's articularly religious, but it's a great tune. I wish the li'l ol' band from Tejas would write more like this again.

A great list there, Mr. Burke!

I completely agree about the Velvet Underground song. I was in a band and our Bass player did this song by himself on just his bass and it was beautiful. It is probably my favorite out out eh whole list.

i'll second the great list holler. Mind you, there's still some i would add. You could almost fill the list with Nick Cave songs, but Nobody's Baby Now would be as good a one as any. Then there's Are You Drinkign With Me, Jesus? from the same Mojo Nixon / Jello Biafra record as Plastic Jesus, but i would include the former over the latter, since Drinking... is about the fella in question, whereas Plastic Jesus is about the driver of the truck that has said ornament on the dashboard.

There's dozens of johnny cash ones. Impossible to choose just one.

Honourary mention to Kelly's Heroes by Black Grape - "Jesus was a black man / Jesus was batman! No, that was Bruce Wayne"

Daft as hell, but endearingly so.

And then there's After Forever by Black Sabbath, perhaps the only explicitly Christian song in Ozzy's catalogue.

Aussie band "Beasts Of Bourbon" had a
great tune Called "10 Wheels For Jesus"
on their debut album:"The Axemans Jazz".
The tune is a rocking piece of Cowpunk
about a devotee of JC's praying for a
new big rig for his savior.

For those unfamiliar with The Beasts Of
Bourbon: They were comprised of members
of The Scientists and The Hoodoo Gurus.
They were led by Tex Perkins whose band
"The Cruel Sea" had something of a break
through hit in the early 90's with their
LP "The Honeymoon Is Over". 1993 to be
exact is when the LP was released.

For much more info on The Beast's",Cruel
Sea and other Perkins related projects
just google him.If The Scientists are of
any interest to you I would most highly
recommend any Tex Perkins related groups
to you.Maniacal Aussie Rockinroll to be
    sure.

I guess that since "Jesus Of Rio" by The
Violent Femmes was mentioned it might be
redundant to mention "Jesus Walking On
The Water" on The Violent Femmes second
LP.But I just thought I would mention it
    anyway.

Dude man, you missed perhaps the greatest secular Jesus song of the rock era, and certainly one of U2's dozen or so best songs: "Wake Up Dead Man."

The Rolling Stones LP"Exile On Main St"
also has the medley?" Ventilator Blues/
Don't Wanna Talk About Jesus Just Wanna
See His Face". I'm not too sure if this
    counts but...
