The new Johnny Cash film "Walk The Line" got me thinking about music producer extraordinaire Rick Rubin.
Rick Rubin is my favorite kind of producer. He loves and understands all genres of music. All that matters is that it's good. He's a master of his craft and has a complete understanding of what's come before him. Rick got Johnny Cash the respect he deserved and he should be worshiped for this alone. However, he's also given us timeless albums by groups as diverse as Run-DMC, The Cult, Neil Diamond, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Public Enemy, The Mars Volta, Paloalto, Tom Petty, Slayer, Jay-Z, System Of A Down, The Beastie Boys and Nine Inch Nails. Enough said.

Then you should've left Sheryl Crow, Limp Bizkit,Linkin Park and Slipknot out of this list. Their just awful, I think the $$$ signs hit his brain when he worked with these folks. You would think after working with Slayer that he might of made the next step by working with Strapping Young Lad or Michael Buble hell even Blake Shelton would've been a good move....

I would have to agree with you to a point Guppusmaximus. Beside the bands you mentioned I would also include Slipknot in with my least favorite Rubin produced bands, but they all were pretty groundbreaking in some way. Hell, to be honest I can't even stand to listen to any of the bands you mentioned today.
However...
If Rick Rubin was a baseball player he would be batting 800. Which is pretty incredible.

Well he is definately a popular producer and I guess it's hard to turn down bands that can pay a pretty penny. I do have to say that it was a great article because he is like the Bee Gees of producing in the sense that alot of people don't realize how much work he has done...

I can't deny Rubin's legacy, but over the last ten years, it's really been hit or miss---more miss than anything.

Rick Rubin is definitly the best producer in time. I'm his (french) fan till 1986.
Some mistakes there : hell awaits was produced by Brian Slagel and hard To handle by his right hand and old companion George Drakoulias (same kind of production anyway : loud and dry...)

Jay-Zs "Dirt of Your Shoulder" was produced by Timbaland, not Rubin. Rubin produced the Jay-Z song "99 Problems."
