Music Media: Northern Kings, Icon in Me, Gorgeous Frankenstein, Testament, Joe Thrasher

Part of: Music Media

The journey into music videos (and other bits) continues its mission to deliver something worthy of your time, perhaps introducing you to something new along the way.

This week I continue compiling videos and various musical related tid-bits for your viewing pleasure. Some will be brand spanking new, while others will just be things I like. I am not great with timeliness, but I hope you've been enjoying these video collections.

Northern Kings - "Kiss from a Rose"

Now this is really bizarre. Northern Kings is a Swedish act with members from bands like Nightwish and Sonata Arctica that takes pop and rock songs and gives them metal arrangements. I like the idea, but I am not so sure I can get behind them. The first song I have heard from them is Seal's "Kiss from a Rose." Now, the Seal original is quite simply a beautiful song. This arrangement sounds weird and awkward. See for yourself:

That day, That sorrow

Icon in Me - "That Day, That Sorrow"

Hmmm, interesting. Not sure if I like this. I will admit it does have a bit of a groove, but it doesn't sound all that special. I look at the singer and all I see is Wayne Static on a bad hair day. The video is kind of boring too.

That day, That sorrow

Gorgeous Frankenstein - "Gorgeous Frankenstein"

I need to get a hold of this record. This is actually the first tune I have heard from the band, formed by former Misfits axe-man Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein. This self-titled track is a good one, easy to get into and groove to while watching Doyle stomp around the stage like only he can. Now, if they would only come to my town...

Testament - "More Than Meets the Eye"

Finally the new Testament video is here. It seems like forever since I read about the video being shot. The song is "More Than Meets the Eye" (and no, it has nothing to do with the Transformers). It comes from their latest album Formation of Damnation, which just happens to be one of the best metal albums to come out this year. The video is pretty good, although I wish they hadn't added those sound effects.

Joe Thrasher - "Speed Kills"

This video is rather cheesy and cheap, but the song rocks fairly well. Joe Thrasher is named for the fact that they are three "average 'Joes' gone metal-thrashing mad!" The song is straight up thrash with a voice that is slightly reminiscent of Accept. Check out the song, you can skip the video, but you may find yourself liking the musical content.

Joe Thrasher - "Folsom Prison Blues"

Even metal heads bow down and pay respect to the Man in Black. Although, I will admit that the thought of a metal take on Johnny Cash is a pretty scary proposition. Still, this Joe Thrasher cover of the Cash classic is not half bad, so long as you like metal and are willing to give it a shot.
