I got Poisoned back in my junior year of high school when the band Poison came out with the album Look What The Cat Dragged In and the single "Talk Dirty To Me."
I was hooked with the punk glam metal riff, dirty raunchy vibe, and naughty lyrics. I was a huge fan all the way up to the Flesh & Blood album. At that point, metal had developed too much polish and shine. It was missing the roughness that attracted me in the first place. I went looking for something different, something Nirvana and the Seattle grunge scene found in me.
Poison never really left but now, twenty one years later, Poison is splashing back with Live Raw & Uncut, a live DVD and CD box set shot in High Definition in St Louis back in 2007.
The band made a point of recording the film and music without fixing anything in the studio, something that I really respected and enjoyed. I like seeing bands and hearing music that are rough around the edges. Anybody can be a studio band, let’s see what they do on stage. Poison excels on the stage. It is obvious from the first seconds of the show that they were made to play live and that is what they love to do. The band has honesty in their smile and energy on the stage.
Of course, it is twenty one years later and no one is looking as young and fit as they used to up there. Even with all the energy they pour out, they are pudgy. Seconds into the show, Bobby Dall lifts his arms to show off a muffin top. Rikki Rockett has a couple of extra chins, and Bret Michaels has traded in his acrobatic antics for excessive finger pointing and exhorting the crowd to get their hands up. His between song banter is cringingly cliché and had me fast forwarding to get back to the music.
