The songs are mainly from the All for You record, of course, with “All for You,” “You Ain’t Right,” “Someone to Call my Lover,” and “Son of a Gun” making appearances. On the latter, Jackson is joined briefly by Missy Elliot. Janet’s standards are here, too, including “Love Will Never Do (Without You), “Nasty,” “If,” “That’s the Way Love Goes,” and “Rhythm Nation.” The stellar riff and hard-rocking beat of “Black Cat” highlights the show.
Jackson’s soft-spoken nature and gentle vocals don't really make Live in Hawaii a powerhouse of a concert, but there are enough visual delights to gratify and arouse most fans. The concert is incredibly sexy in some parts, as Janet performs her customary erotic seduction during the lap-dance number of “Would You Mind.” Her “victim’s” facial expressions are priceless and a comical bonus feature on the DVD features a few more variations of the song from different concert dates, each with a different fan plucked from the crowd.
The DVD also heads backstage on a few instances to cover Janet changing wardrobes with the stealth of a seasoned veteran. Director David Mallet captures the steamy mood of things rather well, showing us close-ups of Janet’s toned torso as she switches bras and costumes.
All in all, Live in Hawaii probably won’t contain many surprises for those familiar with Jackson’s live performances. It still chronicles a pretty good tour and shows the range and talent of Janet Jackson. There is no question that Janet gives her all physically, as the dance moves and choreography appear to be very intricate and challenging. She leaves it all on stage, showing why she has staying power and why she can still give one hell of a show in the age of flavourless pop princesses.
