Others have reviewed it here before, but it would feel so empty without me. So I've finally seen MTV's Video Music Awards for myself. I felt like I was transported back in time to some odd spot in the space-time continuum where the young Rolling Stones, The Who, and Michael Jackson were sharing the stage. I don't think that it's just because I'm old enough to remember seeing the originals way back then.
Man, I even think I saw Bruce Springsteen and Axle Rose doing a parody of their younger selves. Damn. When did hip, cutting edge music get so old and recycled? How is ripping off imitating Mick Jagger or Michael Jackson (when he was alive and human) any different than rapping over the music from an old hit. It's like the P. Diddyfication of rocknroll. Everything that's old is new again, my ass. Wasn't there a period in there between the 1920's and the 1980's when popular music was evolving and creative? Now teenager's think The Hives are ultra hip, but how are they any different than an Elvis impersonator? I can see them on a Vegas stage with Rain doing a tribute to the British invasion.
And someone should tell The Vines that trashing your equipment at the end of a song isn't very rebellious when you do it night after night at the end of the same song. Especially when The Who were doing it 35 years ago. That shit got old and predictable even back in the 60's. Justin, I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You aren't an old white alien woman, so stop trying to be Michael Jackson. Use your talent for good and not evil.
No wonder Britney left your ass, you mixed up future pedophile psycho. It's sad to think that Limp Bizkit has been the most original influence in caucasian music in the last five years. Yeah, they copied things, but mixed it into a unique style that spawned a thousand other angry tattooed racker bands. Give me rap with it's attempt to be creative, even when it fails. I may be old, but I like my shit fresh.

The Hives struck me as a Rollingstones karaoke band with Kurt Cobain playing guitar.

Seeing those guys lined up with their shirts spelling out "H-I-V-E-S" changed my life, believe it or not. It looked to me like they were making a fashion statement about AIDS awareness. Certainly got me thinking, anyway.

I love the Hives, but I must agree that the whole Mick Jagger impression was a bit annoying. Still, I always like to see live music (as opposed to lip-sync), especially wild, loud rock n' roll. The Hives, The Vines, The Strokes and The White Stripes (my favorite) are the 4 emerging bands leading the real rock come back and I'm glad to have them! I'll take that over boy bands or plastic solo artists with 2 dozen backup dancers anyday.

Many bands are far better and more creative than Limp Bizkit, and some of those bands are pretty mainstream. Weezer comes to mind; their album Pinkerton (1996) was trashed at the time, but is now staging a comebacnk (perhaps because people realize how lousy most pop music is). Their newest cd, Maladroit, was equally creative, incorporating rock elements like the Vines/Hives wish they had the talent to do.

I didn't say that Limp Bizkit is good or bad. I said that they had the greatest creative influence in rock music (whatever that is) in the last 5 years. Weezer's Pinkerton falls just outside my 5 year timeframe, but I will grant that it has influenced a large number of bands.
Everyone is influenced by those before them, and I actually like the big four "The" bands. I just find the open imitation of one specific influence really boring after a few minutes. Rock-out like a young Stones or get psychodelic like the late Beatles, but don't wear the clothes, haircuts, dancesteps, chord progressions, lyric patterns, stageshow antics, etc. like you are a group of rebels at the front of the next big thing.
Take from the past and add plenty of yourself, if you want to impress me, anyway. I doubt that anyone really cares about impressing me, though, as long as CD sales are good.
