MTV VMA Nominations are out!

The nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music awards were announced today with Green Day leading the pack with eight nominations for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and their album American Idiot. Green day was closely followed behind by Gwen Stefani with nominations for her videos for “Hollaback Girl” and “What are you waiting for you?” and Missy Elliot, both of whom were nominated for six awards.

The awards will be handed out on August 28, in a show to be taped in Miami, site of past VMA award shows. Performances by Kelly Clarkson, Kanye West and Green Day are already slated for the awards show, with more surely to be announced in the weeks to come. Hosting honors this year fall to P. Diddy.

In past years, the VMAs have been the show to watch. Eye-catching performances and other events make one wonder what will happen when this show comes on. In past years, we had Howard Stern come down from the ceiling as Fartman and in recent years the kisses shared between Madonna, Christian Aguilera and Britney Spears raised some eyebrows.

Where the Grammy’s are more serious in tone, the VMAs are more laid back. What will happen during this year’s show? To find out we’ll have to watch August 28.

Awards are a waist of time

I don't see them as a waste of time. Awards recognize those that have demonstrated talent. The VMA's are no different in that respect to any other award show.

thanks Gina, we love awards around here as far as I'm concerned: they afford a chance to stop and take stock, to compare notes, to agreee, disagree - all the good stuff.

I'm trying to think of a joke for "waist of time" but having a hard time

Awards do usually end up generating a great deal of discussion and debate. I know the VMA's are usually at least interesting to talk about for a bit after the show airs. They end up having something shocking happen one way or another.

Awards/award shows are good conversation starters but it is rare when entertainment awards are given to the truly deserving. Yes, I know how subjective it all is.

And do not get me started on the Gwen Stefani... I cannot call that a song. I just cannot bring myself to do it. No, no, no.

“Boulevard of Broken Dreams” should win for the most overplayed song on the radio that isn't a rap or R&B song.

    Gina,

I have moved this to Advance.net, a place affiliated with about 10 newspapers around the country.

    One such site is here.

Also please let your contact know, if you had one, that this article, is published at one more place. That helps to show they get two?, three? for the "price" of one.

    Thank you.

Thanks for letting me know, Temple! I actually didn't have a contact on this. Just saw the news, saw it hadn't been covered yet, and jumped right on it!

Well, the MTV has lost its relevence in the past 10 years. I remember back in the 80s when this was the anti-awards show.

Now it seems that its just as corprate and industry controlled as the Grammys or the Oscars.

    P. Diddy or whatever his name is, is the worst vma host in mtv history. he and his cohorts can barely speak english let alone host a good show. music fans across america have been robbed of a funny show. where is chris rock or david spade, or someone with an ounce of hosting talent?? not to mention chester the molester r. kelly's HORRIBLE video, who did Jive records pay off to air that GARBAGE? or maybe p. shitty got him on the show...

What is happening to America? There weren't any decent artists on that show last night. What ever happened to real american music like country there wasnt even an award for it whatsoever. Sure they talk about the best rock award well it might be a better award if there was actually a rock band on there. Greenday and those other bands are not rock music. Some may disagree and say that rock, punk, and rock and roll are all the same thing. But if your going to say that then at least dont be prejudice and put rap, hip-hop, and r&b all under the rap category. If there were actually some decent bands on the VMA's it would have been better you know the ones that can actually play instruments and not just create bass beats on a computer and throw some words together that dont make any sense.

P-Diddy was the worst host in all VMA history! He was too into himself, he was not funny at all, he cant dance, and what the hell was that whole B.I.G. tribute about? That show sucked! And why was that shit-head R-Kelly performing? His performance sucked too. I think the VMAs should be held in back in N.Y. where it belongs. And I thought it was so stupid how he gave a shout out to his posse in the, like any one cares! MTV needs to get their shit together.

MTV VMA awards... yeah, right... they should just change the name to the BET awards. Why wasn't Anna Nalick nominated? She should have snagged for Breakout or Best New. And why was U2 nominated for their video? It came out 2 years ago! No wonder Greenday won so many awards, the were the only artists there with any talent. It seems that everbody else who was nominated for any awards are artists that MTV has relationships with. The VMAs have turned into such a popularity contest, which ruins MTVs credibility. Who picks the winners? Who nominates? What sort of credentials do these people have besides being friends with P diddy (or whatever the hell his name is now)? What a waste of my time. I want my three hours back!

Where is Madonna, the Queen of Pop? "Hung Up" was the most amazing video and she should have won tons of awards for it. I won't be watching.
