There are many organizations focused on the rebuilding of Rwanda after the genocide of 1994, but only Jean Paul Samputu, founder and creator of the Mizero Children of Rwanda, is helping to teach orphaned children about their culture through music and dance.
After working locally to bring a sense of self esteem and culture back to those children so devastated by the genocide and AIDS epidemic, Samputu has brought a troop of twelve of these children to the U.S. to tour. The Meizero Children of Rwanda are performing across the country, demonstrating what they've learned and have come to value as well as educating the public about the crisis in their home country.
This first tour kicked off at the Lake Eden Arts Festival in Asheville, N.C., in October and will conclude at United Nations Day in New York this December. The organization hopes to raise awareness as well as funds to support an arts-centered academy where it can continue its mission to keep the culture of Rwanda alive in the children.
