Megadeth call it a day...again

Dave Mustaine has declared 2005 Megadeth's final year. As you would expect with the band, Megadeth's career will end on the road. He also expresses his sympathy to the victims of the tsunami.

"Droogies! While 2005 brought much suffering and sadness to many people at its end, I hope for most of us here that were separated from such tragedy, that you had a terrific 2004. My heart still goes out to the Abbott family, the families who have lost loved ones in the ongoing war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and also the many millions of people around the world that had their family or a friend touched or worse by the Tsunami.

Trivial as it may seem after saying that, I look forward to great 2005 with you all, near and far. As this final Megadeth record and tour run its course, I have met or "re-met" many of you Droogs out there; some new, some old, some crusty. Megadeth plans on doing the Euro/UK tour as you know, then tentatively to Japan and Oz, and hopefully South America, to be finished with one last victory lap of the states this summer.

Since this is the final year of Megadeth, it is also fitting to remind you that it has been twenty of the best years (and hardest) of my life. Yes, KIMB came out just a wee bit less than 20 years ago and by this May, it will have been our 20th anniversary. It is also fitting that a complete lyric book come out of all my songs, which will be out in the late spring/early summer...

I wonder if his band less than well recieved recent release had any baring on this decision.

less than well recieved recent release

I've only seen fairly positive reviews of The System Has Failed - most noting (as do I) that, while it may not be Rust In Peace great, it's also not a low-point like Risk or even the marginally better Cryptic Writings.

This second end of Megadeth shouldn't come as much of a surprise - it sounded like it was the end when Mustaine talked about the album and tour before the album came out. He'll likely go solo and release stuff that sounds just like Megadeth anyway . . .

where does Countdown To Extinction fit in the bad-great continuum?

it's the only one i own.

I own everything Megadeth has ever done. I also own Rude Awakening (Dave's DVD). I will miss Dave although don't you kind of think he'll be back? I like all the albums (including the system has failed) except for Risk and The World needs a Hero. Cryptic Writings is my favorite.

Count Down to Extinction is probably their best commercial success.

I put Countdown just below Rust in Peace, about equal with Youthanasia, actually. I actually preferred Youthanasia until the recent remix/remasters came out - now I love both about equally. You really can't go wrong owning all three, actually. Rust in Peace is furious - Mark, man, you gotta get this one at least!

I got into Megadeth with Peace Sells..., and I don't think they've ever topped that album.

If we promise to miss them, will they just go away?

Look, I actually have very little against Megadeath. They didn't do anything for me, but I never really minded them either.

What I do mind are these damn reunion, re-reunion, re-re-reunion, we're breaking up, we're getting back together routines. They are starting to seem more and more like cynical cash grabs. And I am not just speaking of Megadeath. Tons of bands have pulled this stunt and it has to stop!

The first couple of Megadeth albums were very good indeed. My fave track is 'Wake up Dead'. My only trouble with Risk, which I rather enjoy, is that it isn't a bleeding Megadeth album. Megadeth is thrashing metal, not hard rock, Risk is hard rock.

    goodbye Megadeth

Well, I agree with the 'Peace Sells' comment... as I stopped listening to them after that too. However, Dave Mustaine retiring is as common as a band retiring. Remember, he broke up the band for good just last summer after he fucked up his hand really really bad. Dude probably isn't even 40, and is a monster egomaniac... we will hear from Mustaine soon.

Oh, he isn't going away, just the band. I am sure he will be back in some form or another.

Yeah, "Wake Up Dead" is pretty much a masterpiece. To my mind, Chris Poland was the only guy who ever figured out how to play worthwhile guitar solos over thrash metal.

"Peace Sells" (the song) is another classic; it used to be the MTV News riff, back when they had those little two-minute news breaks between actual music videos. And my favorite Megadeth riff is that one that shows up half-way through "The Conjuring" - fantastic guitar tone on that one! "Black Friday" is good evil fun, as is "Devil's Island". And there's the pisstake of the Yardbird's "I Ain't Superstitious". It's a pretty solid album.

"I wonder if his band less than well recieved recent release had any baring on this decision."

Actually, it had no bearing on the decision... it was made AND COMMUNICATED far before The System Has Failed was released... and I've not seen any evidence that it was "less-than-well-recieved"... what basis are you going on?

Looked at the reviews in magazines for one thing. I know I am basis this in fellow reviewers...

There is some amazing Megadeth. Peace Sells is of course brilliant, but the best Megadeth recording must be their cover of Anarchy in the U.K. It is a thousand times better than the original. Of course, I regard the Sex Pistols as no talent ass clowns... so my perspective may be tainted.

Haha Lono. You really want to wind up Pistols fans remind they were basically a punk "boy-band" put together by McClaren to make some money.

Actually, that several years ago, Lono, and Mustaine took a couple of years off completely away from his instruments and music in general before deciding to do a solo album. When Sanctuary decided to try and hold him to a contract for Megadeth, he simply decided to call his new project Megadeth, got some of the old crew back in on it, and put out The System Has Failed. Otherwise, this would have been a solo album.

But yeah, total egomaniac. Still, I have a soft-spot for the guy and his music.
