Lotsapalookas Returning

Lollapalooza is returning with its founder and original headliner, Perry Farrell and his band Jane's Addiction:

Jane's Addiction, Queens Of The Stone Age, Audioslave, Incubus, and Jurassic 5 are among the acts that will topline the revived Lollapalooza festival this summer. The event, initially spearheaded by Jane's frontman Perry Farrell, has been off the road since 1997, when Tool, Korn, Snoop Dogg, Tricky, and Orbital were all part of the package.

Neither a full itinerary nor second-stage acts have yet been unveiled, but 28 North American cities have been nailed down: Atlanta; Boston; Chicago; Cincinnati; Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Hartford, Conn.; Holmdel, N.J.; Houston; Indianapolis; Kansas City, Mo.; Los Angeles; Miami; Milwaukee; New York; Pittsburgh; Philadelphia; Phoenix; Raleigh; St. Louis; San Diego; San Francisco; Toronto; Virginia Beach, Va.; and Washington, D.C.

....Farrell launched the first version of the tour in 1991, with Jane's Addiction headlining a bill that also featured Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T/Body Count, Living Colour, the Butthole Surfers, and the Rollins Band. Since then, the tour served as the model for a host of successful festival tours, including Ozzfest, Lilith Fair, the Vans Warped Tour, and Moby's Area festival. [Billboard]

I am right now looking at a poster from the first Lollapalooza on the wall of my office right now. that tour demonstrated the mass appeal of "alternative rock" bands and set the '90s in motion.

Here is my original review of that '91 show:

The Lollapalooza juggernaut rolled over Blossom Music Center (an outdoor venue located between Cleveland and Akron) for its only Ohio show August 5, my 33rd birthday.

I was still young enough to enjoy a birthday, but old enough to start calculating the percentage of my theoretical life span already squandered. Actuarial tables insisted that I had more ahead of me than behind, but I could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Life is a gamble and offers no guarantees other than BP gasoline will not clog your intake valve.

My brother and I flew through Hudson, City of Lights, one light at a time and then made real time through the cool-guy backroads until we nearly rear-ended a station wagon of such width, breath, and stateliness of movement that aircraft could have landed upon it were it not for the moss and lichen that rested comfortably upon its top deck.

We dislodged ourselves from the dash and returned to our seats. My brother's attempts at circumnavigation were repeatedly repelled by oncoming vehicles and sideward drift by the mothership.

Very cool - Will have to try to make it to Lollapalooza this year - I too attended the first LollaPalooza in Detroit (and the following 2/3 years) - so would be nice to have another all-day blast with Perry and his carnival of music and fun.
