Kurt Cobain did not like my mother's Halloween decorations.
It was around Halloween, the year after Cobain died. My mother goes all out decorating for Halloween. Every year is a different theme. That particular year was rock-n-roll graveyard. She made tombstones for every dead rock star she could think of and stuck them on the front lawn, complete with hands coming up out of the graves and cobwebs and such. It really was lovely. Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jim Morrison... they were all there. And so was Kurt. I don't know why, but this bothered me. It's not like I was a fan of the guy and felt bad. Many specific musicians/singers get new music that they've inspired in some way and/or may perform (i.e. with their names on it); however, they may not sign over copyrights to original music not their own making. If Cobain among all other such musicians/singers is equated with 'Grinch' it's because performers are also 'granted' copyright status not-their-own, and are routed royalty fee payments not legally theirs to claim (i.e., excess money which they may have to return). Why happens is that the issue is not resolved because companies claiming patriotic motives step in to claim copyright sign-over from such musicians/singers (e.g., to route into investment funds). Performers who have a lot of money but who do not freely spend it or pay it out have possibly been routed excess money which should be returned in some way, yet the matter is not resolved in court because companies want the copyright sign-overs.
