In general terms, the music world rarely needs another tribute album. Fortunately, The Hits : Reloaded does have a unique twist. For updates of classic Kool and the Gang cuts, the band itself serves as backing musicians with new vocalists out front. This approach does make some real sense as Kool and the Gang have never been the same since singer James J.T. Taylor departed for a solo career in the late 80's. He returned for a one-off album in the late 90's, but the magic seemed to be gone. Taylor is nowhere in evidence on this collection. The overall effect of this approach is a string of R&B, Hip Hop and Reggae stars auditioning for lead vocalist. Some are more successful than others, but most are well worth hearing.
The singers utilized for this collection range from old school soul stylist Angie Stone to Senegalese vocalist Youssou N'Dour. Among the standouts are the warm, soulful style of Lisa Stansfield. "Too Hot" fits her voice like a glove. Ashanti's sassiness provides an edge that improves on the original of "Cherish," and the collection's greatest moment occurs during the version of "(Ooh La La La) Let's Go Dancin'." Bounty Killer introduces reggae legend Jimmy Cliff and the world lights up as Jimmy sings. A few tracks aren't as successful as Teddy Riley turns "No Show" into a Blackstreet showcase leaving few hints of Kool and the Gang and Redman dissects "Jungle Boogie" to the point where it loses much of its original irresistible funky groove.
Many of these artists shine as guest vocalists, but this collection ultimately doesn't provide any answers for where Kool and the Gang go next. It does serve well to remind listeners of past triumphs and proves the durability of some of the group's best-known songs. Melodies and words hold up well here, particularly with the addition of reggae beats on "(Ooh La La La) Let's Go Dancin'" and "Ladies Night." Tribute albums may not be necessary, but in a world filled with them, this collection serves Kool and the Gang well.
