Interview with Toby Morrell of Emery

Emery are an up and coming hardcore emo band out of Seattle. The band features six members who rock out their combination of melody and smash your face heaviness. They moved to Seattle from South Carolina in order to make their music careers happen. Now with a debut album, The Weak's End, on Tooth and Nail records and a couple tours under their belt, the band seems poised to break.

I got a chance to do an email interview with one half of their lead singing onslaught, Toby Morrell.

(Toby Morrell of Emery)

[Craig Lyndall] How do you like living in Seattle?

[Toby Morrell] Seattle is honestly one of the best places on earth. Mountains, city, the ocean all so close.

[Craig] How much different is it than living in South Carolina?

[Toby Morrell] The weather is soooooooo much better. And the people are really nice. Not that the South Carolinians aren’t but the northwest knows how to grow them.

[Craig] Was it a tough decision to uproot and move to take a shot at making music your career?

[Toby Morrell] No we were ready for a change to become more devoted to our music.

[Craig] I heard that two of you guys are teachers and were supporting the rest of the band as you tried to make your music careers happen. Is there any truth to this?

[Toby Morrell] A little. I received my degree in elementary ed. The other guys got there degrees in music and psychology.

[Craig] You guys are kind of intimidating when you first take a stage, what with half an army of guys up there. How did you guys end up with six people in the band?

[Toby Morrell] We started with 4 and then seth our drummer and josh our keyboardist/dancer had nothing in life to live for so we saved them from themselves. Now we have six men and it is definitely a lot.
