If you’re looking for the hottest act in country music, it’s Texas native Jack Ingram, who recently won an ACM award for Top New Male Vocalist. He told Blogcritics in an exclusive interview, “Oh it was great [winning the award]. I am honored. It’s been a long road to finally be recognized. It’s a lot of hard work, but I’ve finally hit the national stage and it’s good.”
But why become a musician? “I got interested in music just growing up. I listened to music all the time,” Ingram explained. The music he listened to inspired him to learn to sing, write songs, and play guitar. The singers and groups that made him want to get into the music were the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and more. Pretty much Rock and Roll and Country music.
These are also the artists he plays over and over again along with people like Gary Allan and Josh Ritter.
Speaking of the songs that he wrote himself Inram had this to say: “It’s from the world around me, from my life. From things I see and I hear. Things I’m going through, just trying to figure it out.” He also told Blogcritics that sometimes it’s easy to write a song, but it just depends on the song. He added, “Sometimes it’s brain surgery. Sometimes they [the songs] come into my head fully formed and sometimes you really got to dig it out.”
His song, “Wherever You Are” landed at number one on the Billboard Country Single List. Pretty impressive, huh? It’s a great song, so I asked him if he thought there was something special about the song, “Well, I knew that I liked it and I thought people would like it. I thought they could play it on the radio. It just kind of hit the sweet spot, you know?”
