Last month I reviewed I Am A Demon & I Love Rock'N'Roll, the latest album from EvilMrSod, who was nice enough to take time out of his recording schedule to answer a few questions for me. There’s going to be no avoiding the occasional comparison to Johnny Cash, but EvilMrSod has taken that influence and carved out his own sound, which might be best described as blues that’s been sharpened on the edge of a bad boy rock aesthetic and given ample soul through raw lyrics and acoustic guitar.
EvilMrSod is a pretty big departure from your work in Fuckin’ Family Faces. What prompted you to start this project?
EvilMrSod was actually an accident (at least in the beginning). I was trying to do another kind of stuff, different from what I was doing with my “mother-band”. It was a sort of a side-project. I wanted slow dark songs, I wanted country and blues, but really old things, really basic. I didn’t want to use drums, bass, etc., and I didn’t want to scream too much (this I could do it with my band, in fact I used to do it, and I loved it). But when I came to live in Germany, the mother-band didn’t exist as it used to do, so EvilMrSod became the main thing. And then my first idea changed a bit. As a start, I began to scream again, hehe. And then, not all the songs were so dark and slow. I began to play with the idea of acoustic rock 'n' roll, but still with attitude. And I keep on trying.
Speaking of Germany, how has the music scene there been treating you?
I can't complain. I met people and I started to play just a few weeks after I came here, and in that time (almost three years) I think I've reached many goals. I'm playing quite often all around Germany and the shows are every time better. I've had the chance of going to countries like Switzerland, Italy, etc., and that's something I couldn't do before. I'm about to release two records with new songs and the second half of 2008 and the whole 2009 looks very interesting so, I think Germany has been very good to me.
