Interesting Covers

I've always been a fan of completely "turned around" covers of songs. The following list obviously won't happen. But it sure would be fun:

  • Starship Trooper (Yes) - Public Enemy
  • Gotta Serve Somebody (Bob Dylan) - Marilyn Manson
  • Genie In A Bottle (Christina Aguilera) - Les Claypool
  • Radio Free Europe (REM) - The Nields
  • Philosophy Of The World (The Shaggs) - NRBQ
  • Heartbeat (Kink Crimson) - Tori Amos
  • Free Will (Rush) - Ani DiFranco
  • Baby Got Back (Sir Mix-a-Lot) - Tom Waits

Hey, Mr. Bungle covered "Oops, I Did it Again" so I wouldn't discount any of the above.

And heck, Yes covered the broadway showtune "Something's Coming" (from West Side Story) as well as Simon & Garfunkel's "America," so some wacky covers are already out there.

And trust me, you never want to hear Genesis covering "Karma Chameleon" as long as you live. I have, and it's a harrowing experience.

Once a long time ago I heard a female vocalist doing an acoustic cover of PE - Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos. It was well done. I don't know if it was someone well known or not. I look for it every couple of years on-line - I always start presuming it was Ani, but I have no idea. I've never found it. Anyone else ever hear such a thing?
