Police in the Massachusetts town of Springfield have been playing down a fracas that took place during a surprise 50 Cent performance in the town.
50 Cent took to the stage at Spring Jam, an invite-only music event hosted by a local radio station. Although not officially on the bill, rumours had circulated the rapper may appear at the event because fellow G-Unit member Lloyd Banks was performing, and Fiddy owns a home near by.
Once on stage 50 Cent reportedly started throwing water and water bottles
into the audience - all of whom were smartly dressed to meet the venue's
strict dress code. One audience member threw a water bottle back on to the
stage and it hit 50 Cent. The rapper then jumped into the audience, followed
by much of his entourage.
There are then conflicting reports of what followed. Some say Fiddy jumped into the crowd in anger and had to be held back as he lashed out at some audience members - with reports that police are investigating claims that the rapper assaulted at least one person. However a spokesman for both the venue and the radio station that staged the event insist 50 Cent jumped into the audience in a playful manner and although there was a 'scuffle' involving some audience members as the crowd surged forward, this was quickly contained by venue security.
A spokesman for the venue told reporters: "Police were there, our security were there - there was a scuffle, but it was contained within 30 seconds, then everyone was pushed back onstage and 50 Cent finished the song he was singing".
DJ Buck, Programme Director of WZMX, told MTV that the fracas that occurred during 50 Cent's set was "not as bad as some have portrayed it," and that those that caused trouble were, " a few local individuals not representative of the crowd, the atmosphere or the station's audience."
