How Bucky Covington Saved Christmas

Part of: Holiday Music

It is no surprise that as a graduate of the American Idol School of Country Music Superstardom, Bucky Covington was ready to step in at a moment’s notice when asked to join the GAC Country Music Christmas Tour. The decision could prove to be a career changing move that will increase his visibility and prove to his peers he knows what it means to pay his dues. Not to mention, what his name and Idol affiliation can do for ticket sales on a tour that lacks a stand-out country star.

The call to action came no less than two days prior to opening night, but Covington, as an unsigned artis,t was happy to oblige despite his lack of Christmas music repertoire. The Knoxville News Sentinel has reported that Covington’s manager asked him “Do you know any Christmas songs?” to which he replied, “No.”

Utilizing the ability to learn songs on the fly, a skill honed on the American Idol stage, Covington seems like a natural fit to take the place of Buddy Jewell, who was unable to participate in the tour due to an injured wrist. Jewell won the first season of the countrified singing contest known as Nashville Star, and has gone on to have a successful recording career himself, hitting #3 on the U.S. Country Billboard charts with “Help Pour Out the Rain (Lacey’s Song)”.

One of Covington’s best performances on American Idol was his cover of the woe-be-gone “Best I Ever Had” by Gary Allan. He nailed the lamenting tone and sad eyes, recreating the forlorn melancholy found in Allan’s every love-lost word. My favorite version of the urgent Christmas song “Please Come Home for Christmas” was covered by  Allan in 1997, and will be performed by Covington on the GAC Christmas Tour. A delightful coincidence for fans and perhaps Covington’s career.

Thank you for the wonderful article on Bucky Covington. He is a wonderful performer with an amazing talent. I've been an avid viewer of AI since the first season, but have never been so impressed with a contestant as I am with Mr. Covington. So much so that I have traveled to his hometown from NYC to see him twice.

I have no doubts that he will be a huge success.

Great article! Bucky has impressed many people and I have no doubt he will do very well with his career.

Be sure to check out his new website. There are meet n greet giveaways there for the remaining tour stops. My family won them for the Canton OH show and it was so wonderful getting to talk to Bucky and the other artists as well. Very impressive show!
