History and future of the CD

The first hour of Talk of the Nation (which begins at 1 pm ET) today will mostly focus on the history and future of the CD. RealAudio of the show will be available after 6 pm.

Guests include Joe Jackson, recording engineer Benjamin Cantors who helped with the launch of the CD in 1983, NPR reporter Rick Karr, and Chris Bilheimer who had designed the last 4 REM CDs (not sure if I'm spelling some of the names right) .

Karr has been doing an excellent series TechnoPop: The Secret History of Technology and Pop Music. He also did an important report in the spring on radio consolidation. There is a transcript of the version he did for the newsmagazine Now with Bill Moyers on PBS.
