Guster has has just announced a 9-date fall tour to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their breakthrough album Lost & Gone Forever.
Breakthrough is a bit of a relative term here. As drummer Brian Rosenworcel noted, this is the album that helped them "graduate from our van to a bus" while on tour. While Lost & Gone Forever did garner the band their first meaningful national radio exposure, let's just politely say it's still a few million copies behind Michael Jackson's Thriller in the sales department. Still, "Barrel of a Gun" got considerable radio airplay and the band worked on the record with famed producer Steve Lilywhite (U2, Dave Matthews Band).
For the 10th Anniversary tour, the band chose venues because of their historical significance to the group. Ten years ago, the band launched their tour in support of the album at Higher Ground in Burlington, VT. The band has long done memorable shows at Boston's Orpheum Theater. They also had a five-year run of Thanksgiving shows at The Beacon in New York.
In addition, the band plans to do two sets for each of these shows. They'll play Lost & Gone Forever in its entirety and will also play another set mixing songs from their other albums. Still to be determined is whether they'll play L&GF in sequence or mix things up.
Some of you may remember my Fanboy crush on Guster, who were totally my BFF when Ganging Up On The Sun was released. I named it my album of the year for 2007 and while I don't listen to it every day like I did back then, I still queue it up often and am never disappointed. That crush led me to buy all of Guster's albums and I've fallen in love with each of them to one degree or another. I'm strongly considering taking it personally that Alabama doesn't have historical significance enough to merit a stop on the anniversary tour. I guess the restraining order they took out on me as a result of my obsessive gushing is still in effect (I kid, I kid. I'm pretty sure like nearly every other artist whose music I love, Guster has no idea who I am and it should probably stay that way because they'd have to be uncomfortable if they knew how much gushing I did and will continue to do).
