A wonderful year for music, and most other arts, capped off for many with the U2 album release. While the U2 album, and Eminem's Encore were ineligible for this year's Grammy Awards, there is little doubt they will see a few nods next year.

I never agree with the nominees..I would probably choose other nominees but from these chosen by the old fuddy duddies, I'll pick my preferred winners..

RECORD OF THE YEAR: USHER(May I be enlightened about the exact diff b/w record and Album according to the powers at grammy HQs?)

ALBUM OF THE YEAR: USHER(not my fav Album of the yr but it's a close 1st..would be happy with Kanye or Alicia taking it as well)

SONG OF THE YEAR: If I' A'int got you by Alicia Keys(This is the only one where I can safely say is in my top 5 songs of 2004)

BEST NEW ARTIST: Maroon 5 (by a mile)

    BEST ROCK ALBUM: Hoobastank

BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM: None of the nominees appeal to me at all. I refuse to believe that those 5 choices were the best vocally performed pop songs of the year.

Heard nothing from the spoken word nominees but I'll go for Clinton just cos I love him:)

Ray Charles will win album of the year, mark my words. He's dead and the album's gotten great reviews. He'll get the sympathy/posterity vote.

I really think this is going to be the year of "old guys." I can see Brian Wilson winning in his categories, as well as Elvis Costello and Ray Charles.

But, in the end, who really cares? Why do these awards even matter?

They certainly do not matter to me. I rarely watch them. It depends on the performances before I take time out of my life to watch award shows.

In my opinion, it matters to pretentious gits who think just because they play out of a garage and one or two of the band is strumming a guitar, they are someohow playing real music and the geriatrics on the grammy board wiill appreciate them.

Then the public are force fed the adverts of how they are real music because they've won 7 grammies or whatever it is and are better than the Aguileras somehow because Xtina and the likes are bubble gum pop because they are in thongs in their vids and are RIGHTFULLY in my opinion also interested in their image. Gimme a break world!.

I couldn't give a toss about it. MTV Awards? Sometimes I think they just give those to whoever shows up. World music awards? Prince Albert of Monaco's opportunity to look hip and cool and make friends with musicians..

It's all poppy cock..still, if I had to choose one to watch..I would watch the MTV awards because somebody is bound to moon somebody, curse, or kiss somebody and that at least entertains me. Plus, I have fun predicting woinners from their different lists:)

When I want my music, I go to the record store. When I want live music, I attend concerts. I don't care how many grammies Norah Jones has won or will win. Her Live shows are a snooze fest and she literally had to plead for some to wake up at her last concert in England..LOL. If you can't listen to it, how can it be good music to you? What is good music really is a subjective thing anyway you look at it.

The Grammy still have credibility in music circles, and the nominees aren't all that bad. Of course, watching the awards is another question.

I'm one of those people that can care less about awards (much less watching them), with the possible exception of Best Picure Oscar.

That being said, I'm pleasantly surprised to see Green Day gaining some cred with "American Idiot." It's a great album that gets better with each listen. I'm very happy we're 10 years past the time when 13-year-old boys walked around with "Dookie" tee shirts and the band was a teenie bopper phenomenon akin to the Spice Girls.

They are now a serious and seriously good band.

As for the rest of the contenders, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ray Charles take a clean sweep based on the hype of his biopic.

...and they gain cred in your eyes because they've got a gram nod? They've always been a credible band to me. Actually, I preferred their attitude before, than the current, "oh so serious" attitude. I like them wild and wacky. I like Coldplay, Solemn. Diff things work for diff bands.

Pl. tell me more about Solemn - I don't know much about them. Why would you mention them in the same breath as Coldplay, a band I like?

I can't see your post Aaman..I can only see.."pls tell me about solemn"..I shall presume you are directing the comment to me..

Let me aplogise. My point is, I prefer Coldplay solemn..as in their attitude...music..I can't imagine them singing a happy or should I say upbeat tune.
Perhaps it's my punctuation that confused you? Not a darn thing I can do about it. I am as educated as they come and till this day I haven't a clue when to or when not to insert a comma in a sentence.

Still, I think,I like Coldplay, solemn, works....ah crikey! Over punctuation.

LOL - np - things are clearer now. I think it was more the capitalization rather than the comma that misled me. Nice name for a band, though.

Apropos of this, may I recommend "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" - an interesting book on punctuation, via blogcritics Amazon links of course

Green Day always had credibility -- whether I or anyone else lent it to them is a different story. It is pleasantly surprising to see them being taken seriously by The Establishment. That being said, I can now go back to not giving a damn about the Grammys...
