Veteran '90s rock bands The Goo Goo Dolls and Counting Crows have announced a summer tour beginning June 15, which will take them to more than 45 cities. This is the first time the two bands have toured together.
The Goo Goo Dolls recently released their eighth album, Let Love In, which contains the single "Stay With You." John Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and Mike Malinin currently make up the trio that got their start as thrashy punkers in 1985. In 1987 they released their self-titled debut album.
The Buffalo, New York, natives have had numerous charting singles over the years reflecting a gradual shift to a poppier sound - "Iris" likely remains the most recognizable. Released on the City of Angels soundtrack, the song spent 18 weeks on the charts. In light of the success they later included it on the Dizzy Up the Girl album.
The Counting Crows burst on to the scene with the release of their album August and Everything After and the hit single, "Mr. Jones." Recently they released the greatest hits compilation, Films about Ghosts: The Best Of… and will be releasing Counting Crows *New Amsterdam: Live at Heineken Music Hall 2003 on June 20.
In 2004, their song "Accidentally In Love" was featured on the Shek 2 soundtrack. Aside from becoming a number one hit, the song was nominated for a Grammy, Golden Globe, and Academy Award. The rootsy pop-rock band was formed by Adam Duritz and David Bryson, and also includes Charles Gillingham, Dan Vickrey, Jim Bogios, and David Immergluck. Millard Powers tours with them as bassist.
The Goo Goo Dolls and Counting Crows each spent a majority of the nineties topping the charts and dominating radio airplay; catching them on the same stage this summer should be quite a treat.

I've like the Goo Goo Dolls since the early '90's and have followed their progression towards a more powerpop style, although they've always been more or less a powerpop act. Johnny's nicely overdriven guitars blended with alternate tuning acoustic guitar always sounds fantastic. The new one "Let Love In" is a bit more ballad oriented but still contains it's guitar and vocal gems that will satisfy any Goo fan.
I saw them once in '99 and I look forward to seeing them again. Johnny Reznick really shines in live performances.
As for the Counting Crows, I don't like them and never have. Never liked their guitar sounds. I'm sure the Goo Goo Dolls will be the headliners on this tour.

Thank you for your observations Tommy. I would agree the Goo Goo Dolls lean more toward pop than the Crows. I'm not sure it's quite fair to try and compare and contrast them. Their styles are pretty different. It may be one of the reasons they are touring together, to draw larger more diverse crowds.
Of course, you are within your rights to not care for the Crows, but there are songs from both groups that I really enjoy for different reasons.

Just two lame bands banding together trying to maintain some profile on near-dead careers. Goo Goo Dolls covered Supertramp - yikes - so did Jellyfish - thankfully, they ain't around any more - music needs to have an edge, be a bit dangerous - these two groups are as dangerous as digestive biscuits. Just go away - I have heard it before - and better at that.

I LOVE the Goo Goo Dolls! I'm so excited, I HAVE to see them in concert, I can't miss it. I've been wanting to see them in concert since I was 13 and now here's my chance. I'm NOT passing it up, I'm totally psyched! Their music is just awesome, it touches me in a way that no other band ever has. Keep up being totally awesome Goo Goo Dolls!

Hollie, I'm not trying to be mean, but the Goo Goo Dolls' music seems colorless to me. Not bad, but not especially memorable. What exactly is it about them that inspires your passion?

i live for counting crows and i wish they will come at montreal....but they prefer toronto the most boring city in canada......please come in montreal or ottawa....... at least i gonna go in the state to see them i never miss a tour of them......help me!!!

The reason why the Goo Goo Dolls' music inspires me so is not so much the lyrics, but Johnny's voice and the music. It's so soothing and it touches my heart, it brings back childhood memories that I never want to forget. It relaxes me and inspires me to write or to think or to figure out something. I don't know what it is, but they mean so much to me, maybe that sounds stupid? I don't know, but I love how when I hear their music, I'm filled with emotion.
