Glenn Hughes
Different Stages
(SPV)
Glenn Hughes has had a long, varied, and patchy career, managing to do the rock & roll lifestyle thing fairly well. His career was saved, after a bout with heroin addiction, by none other than the KLF, who declared him the "Voice of Rock." (Alas, their track does not appear on this collection.) The man may be rubbish at handling his personal life, but he certainly has the pipes. A great many of the tracks on this 2-cd set are from 94's "Burning Live Japan" album, which demostrate he can still cut it live (the rest of the live tracks are from a bonus (Japan only) CD. The album also features most of Europe sans Joey Tempest & John Norum. Thankfully there are only a few tracks from last year's dismal "Return of the Crystal Karma". He even manages to squeeze in a few tracks from the awesome Hughes/Thrall opus 'Muscle & Blood' and 'I got Your Number' plus the oft-forgotten but great 'No Stranger to Love' from the mis-badged (as Black Sabbath) Tony Iommi album, "Seventh Star". This great hits package truly covers Hughes entire career from his earliest roots with Deep Purple, represented by 'Burn' (natch), 'Highball Shooter', 'You Keep on Moving', and 'Stormbringer'. You hear everything from straight ahead hard rock to GH's funkier side. Because of the variety, even those who dislike one or other of GH's phases will enjoy this collection. Highly recommended for any hard rock fan, and with 2-cds for a single CD price, great value.
