Gig review: Mitch Benn solo

Mitch Benn
Comedy Cafe
London
11 June 2005

Mitch Benn played the Comedy Cafe on Saturday doing his solo stand-up bit rather than his Mitch Benn and the Distractions set. This meant a wee bit more yappy and a wee bit less singing, but not by that much. Mitch was dressed like the guitarist for a rock band in his leather trousers and bandana. (The leather trousers brought on a rant about EBay addiction.) Distracting from the heavy rocker image was the rather dinky electric guitar, that was a bit dwarfed (as was the stage) by the large Mr. Benn. Not that it mattered to his awesomely funny performance to an admitttedly tough room to play (its prone to Hen/Stag nights and large groups one of which buggered off right as he came on). His 'Every Song Sounds like Coldplay' went down a storm with the audience, as well as his 'Boyband' song which he did as an encore. After an initial reluctance from some in the crowd he had them all eating out of his hands by the end of the performance. Mitch does not so much play a room as command it. It was the third night of a three-night stand and his box of CDs was truly plundered by the end of the night. Unlike any of the other performers he was mobbed at the end of his performance. Both openers were competent, though one more than other, but could not live up to the standard set by Benn. Mitch is funny as hell solo and well worth seeing; but I have to admit I missed Tash & Kirsty.

Rating: 5/5

PS: Mitch has informed me that Dr Demento is playing some of his stuff on his show. I wonder how Dr. D heard about Mitch?
