Eminem No Racist

CMU reports:

One of the friends of Eminem quoted in The Source magazine's character
assassination on Slim Shady has hit back, claiming his quotes were taken out
of context and stressing that Mr Mathers isn't and never has been racist. Detroit MC Chaos Kid was Eminem's writing partner from 1988 to 1993 and was part of Bassmint Productions, the rap crew Slim Shady was in when he recorded the seemingly racist raps that surfaced last year and which the Source has based its "racist" claims around. The magazine uses comments by Chaos Kid to back up their racist claims against Eminem, which are made at length in their February issue.

But in a letter to the magazine, which has surfaced on various news groups, Chaos Kid says: "I am forced at this point to recognize that there are obviously some ulterior motives/personal hang-ups/political/racial agendas going on behind the scenes at The Source and this is making it impossible for you to present the issue of these tapes in a true light that would give a full spectrum of perspective."

He defends Eminem's rap - which included derogatory remarks about black women - by saying the rap was one of what they called 'Suckerin' Rhymes' - raps which were meant to "goofy/ stupid/ ignorant/ wack as possible." He adds Eminem was never racist in real life and that "we personally had conversations talking about how we hated racism and racists and we both had real songs denouncing racism."

Choas Kid's explanation for the racist rap released by The Source does not
entirely match that of Eminem - who said he recorded the rap at an angry time in his life and that many of the lyrics were aimed at an ex-girlfriend, the break-up from whom was still dominating his life when the freestyles were recorded.

It remains to be seen if The Source - who have a long running feud with the
Eminem camp - print the letter in their next issue as Chaos Kid requests.

Shut the FUCK up, Me>L. Just because a white guy becomes a famous rapper, doesn't mean he's racist, and I'm Black! As a matter of fact, Eminem is one of the best rappers of all time! If Eminem was racist, do you think Dr. Dre would sign him or he would sell around 18 million records with his 3 albums(not including the 8-mile Soundtrack), or would get his all-black D-12 crew out of tha 'hood, or would have people like 50 Cent and Obie Trice in his crew!!!!! What? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! Look at all the BLACK people that he's worked with. So what if he's white! I heard one freestyle when he said "nigga". Okay. So he said it. I'm smart and cool enough not to go on a fuckin' rampage when a white guy says that. I look at the CONTEXT of the sentence. He said: "You the type a nigga that...blah, blah, blah". He said the word "nigga" as someone would say, "dude" or "man". It's not the word, it's HOW you use the word. Like the word "gay". If someone says their gay, it usually means that they're a homosexual, but it could also mean that they're HAPPY. Bottom Line: Eminem ain't a racist.

Dwaine, I think your perspective is exactly right on this, and I am very glad to hear it.

Thanks, Eric. Also, if you people haven't noticed it yet, Eminem wants to get you upset and such. You shouldn't take his rhymes seriously. Imagine what would happen if you really took his rhymes seriously. You'd be dead now.

Who the hell cares? Rap is a joke and Eminem is just another punk with no talent who is worshipped like God.

    Fucking pathetic.

Isn't this funny? I say one negative thing about rap and these guys start jumping on my case like I'm a criminal or something. Hilarious.

Hey Dwaine, don't get an attitude with me just because I don't worship the almighty rappers, alright? Yes, there are still a few people out there who have have some brain cells left and hate rap. Deal with it, instead of whining and crying every time somebody says something bad about rap.

Why do people bother me with this "Rap sucks" blase, blase B.S.?
The only reason I listen to rap besides entertainment is that I can relate to what most of the rappers say. And I'm not like everyone Josh. You're comin' at rap as a whole without realizing that there are many different types, styles and forms of rap. You're clueless and you don't know what the fuck you're talkin' about. And I'm serious about that. I don't feel like talkin' to you about the different types of rap. What other type of music is morally flexible enough to allow convicted felons, drug dealers and murderers to start anew with a paper, pad and beats? The only thing these rappers do is talk about their life experiences. And if you don't respect that, you's stupid.

    Jan 31, 2004 at 12:00 am

Alright, I'll buy that. I know that there are different types of rap, but the "gangsta" shit seems to be the most popular, wouldn't you agree? So they talk about their life experiences, well whoop-dee-doo, big fat hairy deal. There are plenty of other styles of music in which the artists talk about their life experiences, and they don't have to act like a punk to get the job done.

About the article: The "Suckerin' Rhymes" Chaos Kid is talking about are from a second track The Source was going to release, which is a freestyle where Eminem raps: "All the girls that I like to bone have the big butts, no, they don't 'cause I don't like that nigga shit, I'm just here to make a bigger hit." Based on his delivery (I have an MP3, which you can probably find on Kazaa if you look up "eminem racist"), it must've been recorded in the early '90s, which would put Em at or around 20 years old.

The track that Eminem has gone on record to defend himself about is a different song, called "Foolish Pride," which is about his ex-girlfriend. The song has a corny "Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff" sound to it, so it was likely recorded in the late '80s, meaning he would've been a teenager when he wrote it, which would make Em's apology accurate (he said he was a "stupid teen" when he did the song).

One of Source owner Benzino's rebuttals to Em's apology was that he recorded "the racist track" (whichever one he's talking about) in his early 20s, not in his teens, and that he should therefore "be crucified for lying to the press," or whatever the quote was. This is an example of The Source either: a) not knowing their shit, or b) taking Eminem's apology out of context in order to confuse people.

That's my two cents on the article/issue at hand. About the rest of the responses:

    Um, wow.

Well, they do, Josh as far as rap is concerned. They want to act like that. Like yesterday, I wanted to pick on all who disagreed with me. Why? Because that's the way I am. And that's probably what these rappers are. Most of these rappers come from the streets, so I guess if you just became famous like that, it's gonna take you a while for you to make the transition from a "street" personality to a more civilized one. I don't think this aspect of rap is ever gonna change. As long as there's crime, there's gonna be "gangsta" rap. So maybe it's in their nature to act like a "punk", as you call it. Here's an example. Say you move to France from the U.S., it would take you a while to get used to their customs, right? Same thing with rap. As a matter of fact, it's the same thing with all music. Look at Nirvana. Their front man killed himself because he couldn't make the transition to fame. Rapper Beanie Sigel (who's on trial for attempted murder. He didn't make the transition.) said it himself, "...Wanna make the transition, from the streets to the fame, but I can't let it weaken my game..."-(No Glory from State Property Pt.1 Album). There are some positive examples. Snoop Dogg was a former Crip. He was charged for attempted murder, but was acquited in 1996. He changed his whole attitude around. He's released songs like "Beautiful" and the like. He's made the transition. What I said may either weaken or strengthen your opinion, Josh. These rappers may run around, screaming "gangsta" and such because they haven't made the transition yet. That's the bottom line.

Actually, Kurt Cobain killed himself because he had a condition called Colitis, which leaves you in constant pain 24-7. I think that even the toughest person would eventually succumb to constant agony, don't you? Don't get me wrong, I still hate Nirvana and most new music, but I just thougt I'd share that with ya.

And you may have a point about rappers having to make the transition from street to civilized. But it just seems like some of them DON'T WANT to make that change, you know what I mean? Like the hardcore gangster types, for instance, such as 50 Cent, Ludacris and God knows whoever else. They seem like they're completely satisfied with being society outcasts. Come to think of it, there's an actual rap group that calls themselves 'Outcast'. Coincidence? I think not.

    Ludacris ain't gangsta, he's just a womanizer.

Ludacris is a "womanizer"? Right, and God knows that those women aren't after his money, right? Ha ha ha!

Anthony, you KNOW that I never admitted to liking rap. Your pathetic little impersonation of me was all too obvious. It's okay, though, I realize that people like you are not worth arguing with.

BTW, the reason that I'm on this site is to express my opinions, but I guess you can't understand that for some reason.
