Elvis Costello at the Borgata Casino

Concert review: Elvis Costello and the Imposters play the Borgata Casino, Atlantic City, April 23rd.

Elvis Costello burst onto the stage in Atlantic City last week and launched into his first song - track #1 from his debut album "My Aim is True" - "Welcome to the Working Week." If it was meant to invoke EC's punk years, the effect faded away as Elvis segued into a series of songs from his latest CD, "The Delivery Man" which are more down-tempo and country-oriented.

While Costello worked through his vast song catalog with a lot of vigor, the concert seemed oddly stunted as if an awkward transaction was being completed. Elvis had almost no banter for the audience and after his normal show closer of "Pump It Up" he never left the stage and just followed-up with what can only be called a "rolling encore."

Then it was done and the lights came up. Um...OK. Good night.

I got to see EC on this same tour a few
weeks back at "The Hard Rock Hotel And
Casino" in Las Vegas. I'm not a fan of
his but if I was, I think that I would
have found this show lackluster and by
the numbers. Every review I have I read
gives basically the same song titles &
he also did a sort of unencored "Encore"
here as well. He left the stage but he
waited visibly in the wings. The crowd
barely raised any hell before he came
back out with the whole "You want some
more?" schtick. It didn't seem like an
encore to me. Again,I'm not a fan of EC
but since I had free tix it was a cheap
    date.

I have to agree. I saw Elvis in Oakland. Not quite the same Elvis from a couple of years ago. He didn't involve the audience like I have come to expect and enjoy. Never left the stage for the encores. Seemed like he was in a hurry to get it over by 11 and finished at 11 on the dot.

I travled form Minnapolis to Dallas just to see the delivery man. He did not stop in MN. The show was amazing! I have seen him 20+ times and this was one of the top 5 shows I have been to. Well worth the trip.

I like his earlier stuff but I'd have to be paid to listen to some of his more recent stuff.
