Def Leppard
(Mercury)
Def Leppard have just released an update greatest hit package to "replace" Vault. There is a DVD version with all their videos and a few extras. At 29 tracks, spanning their whole career, it is a rather complete package. Alas, the DVD is let down by shoddy editing and errors both in the printing of the packaging and the actual DVD. Whomever put the thing together obviously knew nothing about they band as two songs are misnamed in one place or another. There are suppose to be two versions of the song 'Love & Hate Collide', there is only one and its the long, rather tedious "story" verson. It addition they have two versions of the video for Slang, differing only in levels that would be noticed by the most anal retentive fan. Considering the above two are of only three "hidden extras" this is not very impressive at all. Advertisements in the music media state there is a "hidden area", when there clearly is not. All in all, this whole thing seems rushed and ill-planned. Fortunately the music (especially the older material) is its saving grace and I am sure this DVD will get slapped on the player quite often. It is just such a shame that what could have been an excellent archive of Def Leps videos is so let down by being so shoddy.

Well, I enjoyed Historia, I may just give this a try, as long as it reaches depper into the early years and less on the later years. I am sure the Leps still rock in concert, but their aalbums haven't been so great in recent years, unfortunately.

To be fair, the last one X, was thier best in many years. If you don't have it, I would recommend it highly.

Alas, I haven't heard X, because after a band trends toward crap, I stop listening, but I might give it a try if it is recommended.

Marty,
I'm intruding here to let you know I posted your review of this to the Advance.net Web site.
I'm the new music review editor guy at Blogcritics.
The review can be found at a few different places on the Advance network around the country, but here's one of them.

It's on the front page right now but that will change as I catch up and add more reviews. Then you can find it by hitting the archive on that link for 11/04.

I'v loved Def Leppard basically my whole life, my opinion of their newer stuff is a good one. I like 9/10 songs of all their new stuff and think if they were to release another Pyromania or Hysteria time and time again people will always say they use to be better. But simply if they produced the same stuff time and time again you would get bored of it and then complain about their lack of adventure. You cant please everybody, they are just trying to realise a modern top 40 chart song/albulm to encourage new and old fans. Their is nothing with a 5 or 10 year old getting into Def Leppard music. Its still better than 90% of crap out there.
