Coronet Blue is an oddity. 12 members (4 guitarists!), and yet the sound is very wimpy. A plus in most bands — at least that is what they say — is that a second guitarist adds depth and fullness to a band's sound. So, with 4 guitarists, wouldn't the listener expect to hear a very mature, full and polished sound? This is not the case with Coronet Blue — not only is the sound not full, but if I had heard it and not known any better, I would have thought they only had one guitarist. Too bad really, a great opportunity missed.
As far as the rest of the band/album goes, the vocals are haunting and mysterious. The drums and bass on this album function, as they should, as one syncopated instrument.
The lyrics are pure poetry. For example in "Brightest Flame," the writer muses, "Your veins are a deep dark river, your lies a shadow cross the sun, a thousand hurricanes and thunder crossed the sky, yeah their raining stars for all eternity."
Overall, the album is a great attempt at being original, and is filled with talented artists. If they could figure out a way to use the added guitarists to make their sound fuller, this album would be as perfect as they come.
