Concert Review: Virgin Mobile Festival, Pimlico Race Track, Baltimore, MD, 8/9/08 and 8/10/08 - Page 5

Actress turned musician Zooey Deschanel approached the stage with her band She & Him.  Not only is Zooey stunning in real life but her voice was beautiful.  This was another band I had not heard of and was glad I did.  The folksy indie rock was really fun to listen to as I took a timeout on the lawn with my cronies.

Pop punk emo act Taking Back Sunday hit the North Stage with a moderately sized crowd.  Blasting through songs from all of their albums they kept the swarm going.  Excited to hear “Cute Without The E” and “The Union,” my friends looked shocked to see me enjoying the performance so much.  I later admitted I have been a fan of TBS for years now.

The weekend malfunction without a doubt was Lil’ Wayne.  I really wanted to see him rap through a couple of songs just for bragging rights.  When I approached the stage his entourage was walking back and forth taking pictures of the crowd acting very immature.  Music could be heard but no one was singing.  Apparently his DJ was spinning some songs to the gigantic gathering that came to check out Lil Weezy.  Forty minutes into his time slot he finally came out.  By then I had already left to check out another act.  With such a tight schedule between the bands, I found it rude for him to take his time.  I later learned he went over his time slot and the result was a cut set by The Black Keys who followed him on the South Stage.

As Lil Wayne was amusing the fans that stuck around my friends and I went to grab a nice close spot to check out Iggy and the Stooges.  We all chose Iggy over The Black Keys as the bands overlapped.  It was a tough choice as I am fans of both, but I had to see Iggy Pop and I am glad I did.  Iggy Pop is still insane and even went so far as to singing a few songs in the crowd.  At one time he ran up by me, did some ridiculous dance and made a funny face.  That right there was worth the whole weekend.  With help from the Stooges, Iggy belted through classic punk rock hits as “1969” and “I Wanna Be Your Dog.”  Despite just having a bunch of their equipment stolen from them in Montreal just a couple of days earlier, the band was in high spirits and played a phenomenal performance.

I have to say, I was very impressed with the green aspect of the festival as well. Hopefully all festivals in the future will follow this example and build on it.
