Friday night at the Time Warner Amphitheater was not your ordinary night. Three generations of metal lined up the stage for the Heaven & Hell Tour 2007 and they put on one of the best metal shows I have seen in a long long time. Black Sabbath with Dio (Black Sabbath Part II as I like to call them) headlined the show with special guests metal veterans Megadeth and heavy hitters Machine Head.
Machine Head took the stage for a half hour of pure metal. Robb Flynn and crew played through four songs and pretty much won new fans because of it. A lot of the crowd may not have heard of Machine Head once they entered the show that night but rest assured they were asking who that band was by the tine their set finished.
Megadeth proved that they still are on top of the metal scene with their set. Dave Mustaine and company came out and blasted through old and new songs alike. With their new release United Abominations out on Tuesday the 15th they gave the crowd a sample by playing “Wake Up Dead” and “Tornado Of Souls”. The adoring fans cheered in approval. “Peace Sells” and “Symphony of Destruction” were a couple other tracks that got me banging my head. All the songs were loud and ferocious, what more could I ask for?
With little hearing left in my ears, Black Sabbath with Dio (Heaven & Hell as they are referred as) hit the stage with an amazing stage background. Dio who is getting very close to the age of 70 from what I have heard, was just amazing.
Where as I myself never got into the Black Sabbath years with Dio, I realized what I missed out on. “Mob Rules”, one of the few songs I know by them, played on to the screaming fans. Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi kept playing amazing, loud music.
Friday night I was treated to some of the finest guitar solos I have ever heard in my life. Even drummer Vinnie Appice performed an amazing drum solo, something I thought was long lost in the new music of today. I just stared in amazement with wide eyes and open ears as Dio sang on. Their set even included a couple of the new tracks from The Dio Years which I have not heard yet but did enjoy.
Before I knew it Dio and the masters of metal took a bow and exited the stage. I felt honored being in their presence. Now I know what my father was talking about when he used to tell me how shows were when he was a kid. As my friends and I sat their while the drunken crowd made their ways back to the parking lot I realized what I great night Friday night was. Three generations of metal was just performed in front of me including Black eff'n Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio. Amazing.
