This is a tribute to Mahavishnu Orchestra and features guitar luminaries like Steve Lukather (Toto), Steve Morse (Deep Purple, Dixie Dregs). Greg Howe and many others. Jeff Richman assempled this lot and obviously kept them on a short lease as there is little in the way of widdling. Its a tight 10 track collection of jazz fusion goodness. Its a fitting tribute to John McLaughlin's epic outfit. Guitar fans as well as jazz fusion fans should be all over this. Its a well put together quality collection that is far better that most tributes of any ilk.

I rather like Greg Howe, and I think he's a great choice for an album like this. Yes would probably be a bit of a stretch. But if Steve Morse can join Deep Purple...
Personally, I never got into Mahavishnu. In principle I probably should have, but something about the tonal palate and the harmonic colors just isn't to my taste. Love the widdling though.

Another recent tribute is led by Gregg Bendian, who interestingly has more of an avant garde background, most notably (leastwise to me), the version of Coltrane's A Love Supreme that he recorded with (my) guitar hero Nels Cline.
I like Mahavishnu Orchestra just fine, although I really prefer what McLaughlin was doing a bit earlier, for example Tony Wiliams Lifetime's Emergeny. What I love most about John, and what I think really sets him apart in the fusion world, is the abrasiveness, dare I say the punkiness, of his playing, especially in his early days, as much as his sophistication and his famous speed.
