If there's one thing country music excels at it's putting heart, soul and emotion into music. Randy & The Bloody Lovelies aren't all country, and they aren't all rock. Alt-country? Nontraditional rock? Somewhere between the two you will find The Bloody Lovelies. The band's sophomore album, Lift, which will be released October 4th, 2005 by Cheap Lullaby Records, manages to mix slow, tender ballads with catchy and up beat pop-rock tracks but it also seems to be missing an important ingredient: passion.
That isn't to say the album is a loser. The opening (and best) song, "Red Carpets" starts off with the catchy chorus "If you kill or steal or lie / You'll go to LA when you die / And it'll be old regrets / And red carpets / Every night". Randy Wooten (singer/songwriter/keyboardist) says this song "exposes the underbelly of life in Los Angeles".
"Blue Horizons" is a beautiful, simple ballad in which Wooten manages to sound a whole lot like Bon Jovi, which isn't really a bad thing on this song.
Some of the songs feel as though they are a little over the top and a little over done, like the song "Nadine", but Wooten says he's aware of it and that he likes it that way. "I like music that is a little eccentric and not afraid to go out on a limb." Lift is certainly proof of this.
The theme of the album is elevators, as is obvious from the title, and if you pay attention to the small details, you'll notice that track 13 is mysteriously missing. "I came up with the title Lift while I was in an elevator one day in New York City. I noticed that this small, enclosed space was filled with random people who I would not have had interaction with otherwise." Wooten adds, "That is what this record is about - different characters coming in contact with each other under odd circumstances. And to me, Lift is just a metaphor for human interaction."

I can't wait for the new record. Some Truth and a Little Money is such a refreshing record for a tired music industry. I can't wait to see what they come up with this time.
