CD Review: Patti Smith - Land (1975-2002) - Page 2

The disc also includes her cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry" and "Because the Night", which she co-wrote with Bruce Springsteen and is her only song to ever land on the pop charts (No. 13).

Disc Two contains 13 live and demo tracks, including the song "Piss Factory" and a live version of "Birdland", which, if it's even possible, sounds better than the album version on Horses, as well a slightly different demo version of "Redondo Beach" than we're used to.

Track listing for Disc Two:
Piss Factory (track, 1974)
Redondo Beach (demo, 1975)
Distant Fingers (demo, 1975)
25th Floor (live, Eugene, Oregon 1978)
Come Back Little Sheba (track, Studio Outtake, 1996)
Wander I go (track, 1996)
Dead City (live, Denmark 2001)
Spell (live, Portland, Oregon 2001)
Wing (live, Paris 2001)
Boy Cried Wolf (live, Paris 2001)
Birdland (live, Los Angeles 2001)
Higher Learning (Unreleased Studio Track, 2001))
Notes to the Future (live, St. Mark's Church, New York, N.Y.2002)

And the secret track in number 13, "Tomorrow", live in Philadelphia, 1978.

The whole CD is enough to set me going for months and years without needing to buy another CD. It's a perfect addition to any fan of punk rock or rock 'n' roll, and certainly any fan of Patti Smith.

The only thing I feel that is missing from this beautifully put together collection is the absence of the haunting and poetic song, "Land/Horses". It almost feels like there is a large gaping hole where the song should be - though, there are so many great songs on this, the hole quickly gets filled.
