CD Review: Korn - See You On The Other Side - Comments Page 3

This is Korn’s St. Anger. It’s their version of The Elder. Great band – horrible effort.

Wow! It certainly does suck when a band finally gives up the last bit of their edge and sells out completely. Korn began inching that way with Follow The Leader, and they’ve now completed the transition fully. See You On The Other Side is by far the most tepid, radio-friendly piece of crap this band has ever produced. Maybe it was the turmoil of their new record deal. Maybe it was the loss of Brian “Head Welsh”, or maybe it’s just a cash grab; but whatever the case, Korn has recorded the worst album of their career.…

I think you must try to listen a few times an album and try to understand it before you review or critic it. Specially with KoRn, a group what from an album to the next uses to radically change, since their first work.

I like all KoRn albums, love some of them (Issues, their great masterwork; KoRn, what a strange, odd, turbating thing...). I like a great amount of music genres, from electronic to metal, but I only like the great one artists in each one. What's what made KoRn speciall, different from the rest? Over their raw-blowing sound, over the lyrics or torn voice of Davies, is something else... the ability of be so turbating, confusing, scaring... that sensations you had listening at Shoot and Ladders, Faget, Mr. Rogers, Kill You, the whole Issues... See you on the other side has all this and more. Again they made it in a different way, but I think a perfectly good way.

Simply, listen at it a few more times, give it a chance. It's a great work.

PS: Sorry if my english it's not good, I did my best ;-)

i hate critics. shut up! did anyone ask for ur lame dumbass opinions? i dont think so, so STFU! u either like the album or u dont. if u dont have constructive critism, then dont even talk.
I don't think one cd is better than another cd, but i do think there r some crappy songs. Here is my list of crappy songs:

    helmet in the bush
    good god, ass itch
    seed, justin, calemtoisis
half of issues songs were shit inculding: 4u, its gonna go away, am i going crazy, dirty, wish u could be me.
make believe, i think untouchables was pretty good. most people dis it, but w/e.
here it comes again, deep inside, play me, when will this end.

as u can see, there is no bad cds, only songs. every cd has at least a couple songs u love and couple u hate. its very rare u find a album that has all songs u like.

so chris akin heres my final words. [Deleted]

Non-critical guy sez "i hate critics. shut up! did anyone ask for ur lame dumbass opinions?"

Me sez I think anyone who visits a site called "Blogcritics" is expecting to hear some opinions.

So me thinkz: if you don't like critics, avoid things that have the word "critics" in the title.

    But your opinion counts too.

Someone here wisely said that it's korn's seventh album. Now, I don't really see that you picture it, but those guys are 13(!) years on.. I've been listening to their sound since the release of FTL, but soon after first hearing I found the earlier cd's. Now, I see that every album is different. For all those years they suprised me with almost every release (excluding "take a look..." which was a mistake as for me...). The last one? People, look at it! KORN IS SEARCHING! THEY ARE NOT STOPING ON ANYTHING! I think, that after so many years of playing, if their not making copies of their songs from the past, it's a good sign. CREATIVITY it's called. You said it's closer to POP then metal. HAVE THEY EVER BEEN A METAL BAND AT ALL?! think! they have never been classified, and that's why they are what they are! they play Hard? yes they do. They mixed metal with hip hop? with 80'ies style? they did, and no one had anything to say about that, couse it was still "cool" and what they do now? they mix with pop! they inspired themselves with queen! "oh no! curse them!":)"the spirit of britney spears is hanging over!":)Well, thats the thing I like about them. Their non compromise way. And I like their latest album. I'm not saying it's their best, but at least fresh. Now, if you peaple like bands that never change, go and give a hug to the AC/DC guys. peace!
ps. sorry everyone for mistakes in english, couse it's not my native language.

this was a solid release from korn. twisted transistor is a catchy song and makes a good first single. everyone needs to keep in mind this is there seventh album and its pretty hard to be original these days. pretty much everything has been done. lets also remember they are the founders of the whole nu metal movement in the first place so if anything everyone else is imitating them!

Excllent argument guys. Shit review mate.

Serious music reviewers offer objective, educated, intelligent comments on albums. Think about it.

Anyone and I mean ANY of you so called die hard Korn fans who are disappointed with Korn's new sound... I understand, but tough shit. If you seriously expect your beloved band to keep the same sound and same songs for seven albums, well clearly you're either too young to know better, know shit all about bands really or are just slagging a good band to make yourself look extra hard core. EVERY GOOD BAND THAT HAS EVER STOOD THE TEST OF TIME HAS CHANGED THEIR SOUND!!
Seriously if Korn had the same sound they had on Life is Peachy and Follow the Leader they'd be slagged for being uncreative, would sound seriously dated, and they themsleves would be bored to shit with they're doing it.

Try listening to music for 20+ years and playing in a band yourself for a few years before you go making judgement on musicians you cant possible know a fucking thing about. I cant believe you'd slag John Davis mate. He's showing the full awesome range of his voice even further. Fark.

Full points to Korn. Fucking great album. Shits on the last 3 easily. Has a touch of 'fuck you all we're back in business' to it.
If you guys want to slag anyone why dont you project it towards Sony who very nearly destroyed this band by forcing them to put out albums they werent ready to do.

u know what? when i first listened to this album i was in between of giving them a 1/10 or a 10/10... now that i've listened it a couple of times i can say : THIS ALBUM ROCKS!!!
See, Jonathan is quiet sad for Head's departure. A lot of songs have messages for head. That's why maybe it's hard to get used to it, now he isn't talking about how shitty his life is, he is talking about Head.
I thought the band had a great new style. The drums gave them great rythm and also the guitar.. well fieldy's bass didn't sound too much in this album. Jonathan's voice sounds empty but it's all because of the band's problems. Imagine, loosing a guitar player they knew from the beginning. No one is going to replace Head. NO ONE. (by the way, i'm quite happy for him. I don't like religion and stuff like that but I admire him, changing his hole life because of his little girl. that rocks =D. And now he is really happy, he has found true happines in religion like a lot of people have done).

About KoRn... they always change their style, not because they want to sell music, but because they are original and that's really cool in a band, I can't remember a band that has done that. They're UNIQUE. This band rocks. So Rock on KoRn !!!!

by the way, these guys helped me a lot with their music. If it wasn't for them I probably have commited suicide a long time ago. Thank you guys.

    so as I always say

Nothin' like a bit of KoRn to end a fucked up day.

    ;)

PD: English is not my first language. Sorry if something is too hard to understand.

KoRn's first four albums were god to me at times in my life. But I've gotta side with you man, as much as I've listened to the new shit, it's fucking garbage. I wish the old korn would come back...shit like this makes me fucking sick. To love something so much and have it sell out. Fuck me...why did korn have to sell out!?! WHY!?!?!? It's the ending of the greatest run EVER. And I did NOT see it coming. R.I.P. KoRn

  • 87 - Elin Maria

    Dec 19, 2005 at 9:17 am

It's a great album! But I must say it's the first album form KoЯn with a bad song on it. But they're going in different ways. They had to. A bandmember is missing. That changes the whole chemistry in the band. What did you expect? That Head had no influence on the band at all? KoRn are going in a new direction. It dosen't necessarily mean it's a bad one.

what a bias spin on it. SYOTOS is brilliant and even my friend who dislikes korn finds herself enjoying this and she likes slipknot. I thought this album would make critics stop dead in their tracks but all its done is make them more bias and more into britney spears than ever before.

I really like this album becasue it is very origional.I wish korn would stop changing there sound becasue they keep loosing fans when they do that but they still make good music anyway. this album is very dark and perverted its hard to get used to it. It is a great cd it is worth buying so go pick it up.It sounds great Jonathan doesnt really talk about how fucked up his life is liek all the other albums he mostly sings about his saddness or somthing perverted. I wish it was heavy like tghe other albums becasue it is not heavy at all its like nin or something indrustral. Im not dissapointed i wish it was heaver but i do like the new sound it is great. 8/10

To post #44: I respond to these articles because I am not only a music lover but a musician as well(Drums-20yrs). I have listened to everything from Cannibal Corpse,Defiance to Mozart and Christopher Parkening. I have quite the knowledge and an ear for music. So,I could tell since the first album(as well as seeing them live twice) that they are a bunch of hacks and that their blinding popularity along with MTV has made it way hard for bands with real talent and no marketing pros to make any money on their work. Just because your talentless A$$ likes their SH!T doesn't make them any good, it just means that alot of people, like you, love crap... Look at the people who listen to Britney Spears...LOL!!

  • 95 - uao

    Dec 22, 2005 at 9:41 pm

Guppusmaximus is a name I listen to when he commenta about music; he really knows his stuff, and I learn from him.

His comment here is apt, I thought it was a fine counterbalance to the article, and it gave me a more complete picture of the music.

I wish more fans of anyone (like the guy in 44, but there's plenty of others like him) would be cool about discussion, and allow unflattering remarks to be part of a dialog. Just pure praise all the time gets embarassing. KoRn would be cool with it.

    Dec 23, 2005 at 3:45 pm

Thanks for the back-up uao!I agree, Korn probably likes constructive criticism but I may have been a little harsh with my original post(#1)But.. I am glad I could impart some knowledge about music to you and I feel that you have done the same for me with your excellent "Top 25" lists...Keep up the Good Work!!

I LOVE music in all styles but when these trendy types of bands that produce grabage (Bad promotion is Good promotion) just to get stuff listed in the Top 40,it makes me angry. There are a ton of great bands who never see the light of day because the mainstream is packed with this non-technical, highly over-produced,slick crap!! The term "Progression" doesn't apply to musicians who "cut corners" to make cash....

And with that I am finished with this Korn thread...

Some may like the new Korn, some may not. But you can't deny the fact that the sound that made Korn unique and original is simply GONE. It's been replaced by a band that sounds like everyone else now.

Korn's first few albums had a spontaneity and almost a jazz-like improvisational feel to them. They were also something these most recent albums are not- ANGRY. There was real hate and pain coming from JD on those releases. There were tears and screaming, coupled with some guitar work that would chill you to the bone. We all knew the band would start to get over-produced, but the sound was still recognizable during 'FTL' and even 'Issues' (their most POP album).

I think Korn really started to go downhill starting with 'Untouchables.' The only song in the past 5 years that feels remotely like Korn to me is 'Ya'll Want a Single.' Korn can do melodic very well ('Issues) and very poorly (everything since), but the fans clearly want a return to the days of the raw, uninhibited sound.

Unfortunately, I doubt those days will ever come.

I admire what the band members have done with their career and their care for their fans is genuine and real. I just wish, at this point of their career, that they'd put out a more mature and interesting work than JD yelling 'Don't give a s**t about politics.'

Is that all there is? That's the best he can do. JD and the others haven't grown much lyrically in the past few years, have they?

  • 102 - Yelrog

    Dec 26, 2005 at 9:27 am

I like the album but I agree it's not the best Korn album. They sound different...and it's not all bad. Artist are people and people change. I hate it when people call artist sell-out; Sorry to say but art is a business like any other. I just wish JD experiment more with his lyrics. And yes I miss the «anger». I guess they are going trought an hugly phase.

I have to agree with the majority of the people on here, this isn't one of their best pieces of work, but I still enjoy a few songs. I have to pay my homeage to Korn though, they got me into the metal sceen when I first saw them on MTV many many years ago. But it's a pretty simplistic choice-hell if you don't like it who is forcing you to listen? I myself will support Korn until the very end, which sorry to say, may come sooner than expected if they don't get their act together. I miss the anger and raw hate that use to pound my ears into music heaven. Hopefully thier next album will win back my assurance with hard riffs and screaming, meaningfull vocals

1 - The fact that Korn aren't emo is A GOOD THING! 2 - Whilst this isn't Korn's best, it is BY FAR the best thing they've done since Issues. Musically, I think it's strong, it's just Jon that lets it down somewhat (both lyrically & performance-wise). It may not be revolutionary, but I'm happy with the fact that finally after 6 years' wait, they've once again given me something that I can listen to more than once.

    Apr 22, 2006 at 7:30 pm

Yeah sure Korn has brought out a change, but who doesn't change?

They've totally changed from the old dramatic music to the new hardcore but fun music.
I especially love it. The lyrics are still extremely amazing, and I think the tune is even better.

I for one hate when people write about a bands mistakes, and how you guys dislike them.
This is only going to offend a lot of people. What you like, isn't what others will like, and what you say doesn't change their point of view.

Not a big KoRn fan. Stacks of bands I'm into more outside of this genre. But for a brief period when Follow the leader came out I totally dug the sound of that album. Follow The Leader is all I need to dig out for a hit of the KoRn sound. I totally lost interest with Issues.
But this new album offers a different sound that I could spend some time listening to. It's more of a fun vibe and it shouldn't be taken so seriously. I bet the band had some fun making it.
Only thing I am finding a bit weird is that someone said they got help with writting from a company that helps out boy bands and I find myself imagining them as a boy band singing this stuff??

Korn were the top reference in nu-metal in the 90's...but now they'r trying something different, ppl turn their backs on em...

well,im a fan since thei first release...although i liked some of the next albums like Follow(...) or Issues, and even i really liked Take A (...) they never hooked me as much as Korn. does that mean the band is dead?

hell no,let em evolve if they wish...at first i'd have agreed with ur review, even tho its kinda biased, but on a second (and third) listening,i must say they album can be quite enjoyable...just dont look for a Fagget-kinda-song or something like that.new album, new sound...maybe a mediocre album, but still a great band.

on the other hand,i must say that their first experiment dealing with industrial music, and they'r already far better than most industrial bands out there (Reznor,go cry daddy lmao)

Korn's new album kicks ass just like all of the other ones. Korn is the only original band that is still making quality music. I am so sick of all the lame ass, punk rock, FallOut Boy BULLSHIT that they play on the radio and MTV. Korn is the greatest band of all time and always will be!!!

I also believe Korn has a message for people like you in the new album, "Fuck you too". And all the fucking plastic, fake-ass, piece of shit music that's all over the TV 'n' Radio cannot compare to good music...from good bands, such as Korn.

It's a good CD not the best. Unlike most foods KoRn can go through all kinds of crap. When you crap it out, it's still whole. After this album, maybe they can wipe off some crap and come out with something better.

  • 120 - Freak Unleashed

    May 27, 2006 at 5:13 pm

This may not be their best album, but give 'em some credit. They lost a guitarist, and that's a huge shock to a band with as much fans, fame, and recognition as Korn. I am a freaking HUGE Korn fan, and I find this album a rather great comeback to the loss of Head. It spawned hit singles like Twisted Transistor and Coming Undone! Those are awesome songs!

As for the critic who said such Korn-bashing things, hey, everyone's got an opinion. If someone on here doesn't agree with you, forget about it. Just because So-and-so said Korn sucked doesn't mean it's true or everyone except for you and a handfull of righteous, die-hard Korn fans thinks it sucks. This was an awesome album! I loved it! I'm still a bit new to Korn, having only SYOTOS, Issues, and Follow the Leader. But for all I have heard from Korn, this was awesome!

I happen to think this album is great. Korn went a different direction and added industrial to thier music this time, like they did once before, but with better studio quality.

And I saw a few people say that Korn "invented" this style of music. I like Korn, but they didnt invent it. Yes, sometimes I do get sick of people looking at me funny when I say "industrial music" It is a genre... google it.
