Freakazoid
Mennen
(Escapi)
Yet another excellent release from Escapi music, who seem to have ended their glut of less than stellar releases. This lot, called Mennen, and no not that Mennen obviously, produce some damn fine hard rock that gets better and better with each play. While a wee bit derivative, there are a few songs where they channel, especially the lead singer, various bands like The Police ('It's Over), The Cult on several other tracks (esp 'The World Keeps Turning'), then a wee bit of Mustaine & Co on another entittled 'Wicked White'. That is not to say that is a bad thing. After all, Jorn Lande has made a career out of being cameleon voiced, and a good one at that. The band's namesake has done backing vocals for Danger Danger, Craaft and the Scorpions so it is not surprising. It is much better when they try something new and let themselves soar like on the opening track 'Open'. Not only do you get 11 tracks, you even get 3 bonus tracks for your enjoyment. Now, be warned, there are some non-native English speaker gaffs that can be rather amusing, as on the track 'Above the Waterline'. Despite all these quirks; this album works wonderful as a unit and is an enjoyable listen. I shall expect this to stay on my iPod for quite a bit of time to come. The only thing left to say is that I really hope to see these guys live. With a bit of luck they could be huge.
