Hypernova blend power chords, grooving drum beats, dynamic dance-rock melodies, and some of the quirkier vocals around. To be all that, coupled with strong songwriting skills, would be a perfect package for any band. But Hypernova have an additional, novelty, element to their story. They are from Iran. Yes, that Iran, member of the Axis of Evil, purveyors of human rights violations, and evidently spawner of a burgeoning live music scene.
Lead singer Raam (other band members are guitarist Kodi, drummer Kami, and bassist Jam) explained, “The underground scene in Iran is pretty intense. There are many amazing musicians driven by a burning passion who are literally putting their lives on the line for their music, just like we did. There's nothing more beautiful than raw and sincere music.”
And in a country where playing rock music has been banned and penalties can range up to public floggings, Hypernova honed their skills playing underground clubs, private residences and other venues out of earshot of Iranian police.
Now the band has just released their first full debut CD, Through the Chaos, from Narnack Records. The first single, “Fairy Tales” is a full-pronged dance rock assault, taking cues from The Strokes and The Killers, but keeping a unique edge setting them apart as a band that is no doubt spawning acolytes as we speak.
Through the Chaos is produced by Herwig Maurer and mixed by Sean Beaven, who previously mixed records for the likes of Nine Inch Nails and No Doubt.
