Bob Dylan To Release Tell Tale Signs - The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 Oct. 7, Free Download Available Now

It hasn't been the hottest summer for new music this year so I'm already anticipating a fall/winter overflowing with essential purchases. October 7 just got more expensive. I'm already buying Oasis' Dig Out Your Soul and now there's a new Bob Dylan collection being released that same day.

The eighth volume of Dylan's "Bootleg" series Tell Tale Signs will be released October 7 and you can download a song from the upcoming set for free from BobDylan.com. "Dreamin' Of You" was cut with producer Daniel Lanois during the sessions for what became the Grammy-winning Time Out of Mind album.

I'm excited about the set. These last few Dylan records (Time Out of Mind, Love & Theft, and Modern Times) have been outstanding. He's been backed by some great bands and I'm perhaps most excited about hearing live versions of some of these most recent songs. I really wish he'd release a proper live album from one of these most recent tours.

As is becoming increasingly common, the set is being offered in two different packages. The standard edition will be a 2-CD set of rarities and unreleased material from the past 20 years; the package will roughly cover the period from Oh, Mercy through Modern Times. A deluxe edition of the package will be released with a third CD in a hardcover slip case and will include a hardcover book of Bob Dylan singles.

Naturally I have to go for the three disc-er. Deluxe editions are only deluxe if they offer more music. An additional 12 songs? Yeah, I'm in for that. I'm having one of them. Here's the full track list.

"Naturally I have to go for the three disc-er."

The release of this collection is indeed news. Your opinion on the release, though, is not. Perhaps this should be labeled as an editorial.

Trainwreck, I have to ask: does it really bother you that much or are you just being a dink?

It doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I thought this sight encourages people to write their opinion on things. I just think labeling the article as "news" is misleading.

This looks like an excellent addition to the already-fantastic Bootleg Series! Thanks Josh. And thanks Trainwreck for pointing out which parts weren't really news. I needed that.

Just as an aside, Trainwreck, this is a news and commentary article. It is news and the presence of opinion doesn't change that.

I think this is going to be an excellent addition to the series. Let the countdown begin!

I'm pretty stoked about this as well as I think the trilogy of "Time Out Of Mind" "Love & Theft" and especially "Modern Times" together make up Dylan's best, most consistent work in decades.

Love the fact that we get an alternate version of the desolation row death march for the apocalypse "Aint Walkin" too. That one gave me goosebumps first time I heard it. Like you Josh, I'll be countin down.

As for the trainwreck guy, as Mick would say, "what a drag it is being bored..."

I think the set is great. Love this period of Dylan's work. Oh Mercy is a sadly overlooked gem and it will get some due with this set. Revisit this album, people!

I think Dylan's approach, however, sucks. Relegating the third disc to a $130 set is shitty, pure and simple. If he wants to make a beautiful set for the collectors, make it available, but don't screw over the people who just want the music and don't want to pay that price for an extra disc. Greedy, nasty, unfan-friendly. There is no reason for this in today's market.

And I don't get what Trainwreck's problem is. The news was reported. We get to voice our opinions here, news or not. You want dry news, go to a news site. I believe Billboard had a very boring article about this. Read it there if you don't want opinions.

What what what? I hadn't heard the 3-discer was clocking in at $130! That's bullshit if this proves to be correct. Unnecessary bullshit.

Yep, go to Dylan.com and click on the pre-order link - $129.99! Completely outrageous. I was looking around at various forums yesterday and fans are PISSED. My hope is that in the next two months the feedback gets back to Dylan's marketing people and they quickly rethink this plan. This is going to sink quicker than the deluxe version of The Beatles' Help DVD, which cost almost as much - it also didn't sell well. (I've seen what I suspect are the same copies sitting on store shelves since they came out, looking pretty dusty, but still just as expensive.)

Outrageous. I'm filing a tort of outrage. There is still time for them to do something about this, if they give a damn.

not only that, the vinyl version doesn't contain the extra material either. man, what weird decisions here, eh?

Aside from my amusement of you gentleman arguing with a fellow named after a strain of pot, Dylan is encouraging people to copy and share that third disc. Hell, I might just steal the whole thing out of a spite.

Yeah, that certainly temps me to download the third disc, even though I´d much rather have the original, but that price is crazy!

El Bicho, I don't want to have to share/trade/steal the third disc. I'd like to buy it. How crazy is this? I'd like to pay for my music but Sony is "forcing/encouraging" people to get it for free because they won't offer it at a reasonable price. They could have my money. This is damn foolishness on their part.

I've been hoping for another Bootleg Series collection of studio outtakes, so this is good news to me (except for the part about the 3-disc vers. being $130...). I don't understand why they've jumbled the songs around instead of doing them in chronological order like in vols. #1-3. Also, I wish they'd thrown a few more songs from the '92 Bromberg sessions (where's Katskill Serenade?).

Ah, well, any new Bob is good Bob. I can't wait!

Well, I've purchased every official Bob album legally, and I would have paid for the third disc as well if it was at a reasonable price. But not at $120!!! That's just blatant evil money grabbing.

Waited so (too?)long before I bought the set. I hoped the deluxe set would appear on my radar prices way below $100,00.
A proper version proces wasn't ever offered.

Now the new album is available here in Holland tomorrow... so I had to get this one behind me.

I bought the double-set, wonderful. I am going to steal the third disc. Any advice?
