Blues Bash News: Finalists Determined in San Diego Regional IBC Competition

On October 28 and November 4, 2006, Blues Lovers United of San Diego held their regional International Blues Challenge preliminary competitions to help narrow the field of amazing local talent that will ultimately represent the blues organization in Memphis, TN at the IBC Finals.

The IBC Finals in Memphis will take place February 1-3, 2007. Blues acts from around the world, each selected by their local blues societies, will compete at various venues up and down the now famous Beale Street over the course of the weekend.

Last year, BLUSD sent Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz to compete for top honors in the band category, and Nathan James & Ben Hernandez in the solo/duo acoustic category. Both acts represented well, with Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz placing 2nd overall.

This time around, BLUSD is sending only a solo/duo acoustic act to Memphis. From the many artists who competed, the pack has been pared down to five very entertaining acts. Those acts will strut their musical best for San Diego blues fans on November 18, 12-4pm at Ocean House in Carlsbad, CA.

So who made the cut?

  • Nathan James & Ben Hernandez will play their signature country blues
  • Anna Troy, our very own personality-packed singer/songwriter darling
  • Daniel Hartzheim, the blues piano man
  • Byron Hudson and his Delta style blues guitar
  • The Indian Joe & Sonny Derin Show, with their down and dirty blues harp and guitar

No matter who prevails in the regional finals, San Diego will have plenty of talent heading east for the big IBC bash in 2007.

The BLUSD IBC Regional Finals will be held at Ocean House, 1300 Carlsbad Village Dr., Carlsbad, CA. 760.729.4131 Admission is $5 and raffle tickets will be available for great blues prizes.

San Diego was never the first city that came to mind when I thought "the blues." Now you've piqued my interest. Great reportage.
