The first time I saw Deek Jenkins perform I almost didn't. Before they went on stage a friend of mine, who fronts another band, said to me, "You shouldn't even waste your time on these next guys, they are just a bar band." Luckily for me though, I had nothing better to do that night and so I stayed. I was so impressed with what I saw that Deek Jenkins immediately became one of my absolute favorite "bands that no one has ever heard of."
I got a copy of their four song demo CD and played it incessantly for a week or two. Of those four songs I would have to say "Swollen" is my absolute favorite, although I like them all a great deal. That was a year or so ago and I have since worn the CD out and really need to get another one.
Deek Jenkins has a kind of electrifying intensity to their music that makes you want to get up on your feet and do something. The night that I saw them every member of the audience was up on whatever object they could find (tables, chairs, couches) to get a better vantage point to watch the band perform. This was a NYC club audience too and for the most part they aren't very reactive but this band has that "something" that makes an audience go wild. I too found myself standing on top of a table snapping photos while they played.
Their lead singer was wearing a pair of glasses with heavy black rims and I got this weird flash of Buddy Holley fronting the Sex Pistols. It sounds bizarre, I know, but it sort of stuck with me. Their music is hard and raw and does kind of draw from the more hard core punk bands. It is the quintessential testosterone fueled rock and roll that the Lower East Side of Manhattan is famous for with a shot of Jack Daniels on the side. If these guys are "just a bar band" then it is a Biker bar in a seedy part of town and probably a place I have been to before.
