2007 was an excellent year here at Band of the Week. Many fabulous indie bands were discovered and shared, several old friends made it one step closer to fame and a few new columnists joined us. Before we begin 2008 we wanted to sum up 2007 with a list of our top ten bands and their albums; however we have decided to include a few new bands that will be featured early in 2008. Assistant music editor and Band of the Week organiser A.L. Harper and regular Band of the Week columnist Michael Jones worked together to put this list together, and decided jointly on its order.
10. The Flaws – Achieving Vagueness - by Michael Jones
Sure I could come up with a few witticisms about how The Flaw’s Achieving Vagueness is something that is nearly flawless, but — okay, darn it, I just did didn’t I? Sorry. Maybe I’ll just stick to the facts and mention that The Flaws manage to sound like a nice mixture of The Smiths, The Cure and a sprinkle of Jet, all while managing to sound distinctly, well, like themselves. Chock full of smart melodies, perfect guitar-work, solid vocals and some of the better lyricism you’ll ever hear grace your eardrums, The Flaws are not so much the bottom of this particular list as they are one of the better overall Indie bands that you’ll find yourself listening to this year. Oh, and listen to them you will by the way, or you’ll be guilty of missing out on a wonderful band.
9. Two Cow Garage – Three - by Michael Jones
Putting aside the wonderful wordplay inherent in the name of this band, Two Cow Garage prove that they are nothing less than a superbly talented band by filling their third full-length album, entitled appropriately enough Three, to the brim with striking musicianship and some damned amazing vocal work. If I were asked to describe TCG’s sound I think I’d have to call it a nice amalgam of Uncle Tupelo with the very best that Whiskeytown ever had to offer — all with a nice touch of rock sensibility. From the moment I first laid ears on these guys I’ve been a fan.
