August Music Mixtape

Every month or so I do this little thing, packing new music tracks from all over into one smooth blend. You can always download them from my website, Culture Drift.

The Mix
Mogwai - Auto Rock
Shiny Toy Guns - Le Disko
Justin Timberlake - SexyBack
Pharrell - Baby
Cut Chemist - A Peak in Time
White Rose Movement - Love is a Number
Mew - Apocalypso
Syd Barrett - Golden Hair
Oneida - Busy Little Bee
Daedelus - Sundown
The Black Heart Procession - The Spell
Sleepy Brown - Margarita
Girl Talk - Hold Up
Scandal - The Warrior
Panic! At the Disco - But it's Better if You Do
Deadsy - Better Than You Know
Sigur Ros - O Fridur

The pop of summer is in full swing as the season closes down. That is why, irresistibly, I must include the new Justin Timberlake. This is also why I've included Pharrell and Sleepy Brown; remember him from Outkast's The Way You Move?

But if you don't like R&B/rap, there is a lot more in the way of alt rock and indie this month. Like two bands with similar names but very different sounds, White Rose Movement (retro electroclash rush from the UK) and Black Heart Procession (slow, spooky and soulful from San Diego).

Another odd name is the band called Mew, who produce moody atmospheric rockers from their native Denmark. They lead in nicely to a real moody cat named Syd Barrett, who was once the lead singer of Pink Floyd and is now about one month dead.

For groovers and DJ types, I have a triple play on this mix: Cut Chemist, Daedelus, and DJ Shadow from his upcoming album The Outsider, which was four years in the making.

A great DJ discovery comes from Girl Talk, an extreme set of mash-ups that mixes individual chords and notes from too many songs to count. In "Hold Up" you can easily spot 50 Cent, the Pixies, and whoever sings "Laffy Taffy." Listen to the whole thing; don't be turned off by the first few notes.

For the random retro hit this month, I am going with Scandal's 1984 track, "The Warrior." You will end up singing along so just get it over with.
