Anthony Hamilton “Soulife” CD Review
The “new” Anthony Hamilton CD isn’t really new.
It’s new to the general public but if you are a music industry type, chances are
you may have heard some of these cuts before. Anthony Hamilton is no new
jack. He has been on the musical grind for a minute, sitting on the sidelines
waiting for the coach to send him in the game. After a long wait, Hamilton
is finally getting a chance to show the world why he is in the game! His latest
CD is a re-release of some of the material he recorded a while back, but never
saw the light of day. While it may not be a good as his first CD, it is a tight
package that Hamilton and R&B fans should pick up!
Here’s the breakdown.
- “I Used To Love Someone”-Nice opener to the
CD. A mellow flamenco guitar weaves a nice background to the song. - “I Cry” – One of my favorite tracks, this one
has a slight retro feel with it’s classic R&B styling. Imagine if Motown
had drum machines and synths back in that day, this is what the music might
have sounded like. - “Clearly” – Decent track..doesn’t move me as
strong as some of the others tho”. (my first FF) - “Georgie Parker” – Bouncy beats bring this
ballad full circle as Hamilton paints the picture of Georgie Parker
and his life. Nice song. - “Day Dreaming”- Another smooth one from
Hamilton. It might have you “caught up in a memory” if your not
careful! One of my favorite cuts. - “Ball & Chain” – Yet another banger. The CD is
in full stride when this one comes on. I can’t wait to “trade my Ford a
trade it for a ticket” for a ONE WAY ticket to….. Tennessee
(close enough to Georgia!). Time come soon, seen? Until then, play
this track and think of your boy! - “Ol’ Keeper” – The spirit of Bill Withers
is in the house with this one. Tell me it doesn’t sound like something he
did and I’ll eat my DVSs. Why isn’t this song on a soundtrack yet?
(Send my 10% consultation fee to TSC!) - “Love and War” featuring Macy Gray –
This one is on a soundtrack. Nice collabo with Ms. Macy Gray. - “Last Night” feat. Sunshine Anderson & Dolo
Pichino – Ahhhh sh!t! That’s my song! This joint stays on repeat! No need
to say any more on this one. THE BOMB! Turn down the lights and pass me my
lighter baby…. - “Love Is So Complicated” – “Let’s cha cha cha
cha cha…” opps..wrong song. Still works tho’ as AH rocks the
up-tempo beat. Good club track if you spin R&B. (Is Nell’s still
open? Miss that joint….) - “Icing On The Cake” – New age soul wounds
prevail on this one. This is a different look for AH as this track
sounds more like a Jamoroquai or Sweetback would have done. Not bad but not
his best. - “Exclusively” – Hamilton finishes up
with this ode to commitment. This song reminds me of Andre 3000 for
some reason. Maybe it’s the high and almost off pitch. Regardless, it’s a
nice wrap up.
Final Verdict-Anthony Hamilton “Soulife” CD = Grade A
Baby Making Music! Cop That!
