I'm halfway through watching American Idol and I've shed tears - good tears.
I watched about half of the first season of American Idol. I thought Ryan Starr was hot; I thought there were some good voices. And someone talented won, which was very reassuring. I didn't watch the next two seaosns at all. I may not watch the rest of this series. But I'm enjoying it today because unlike most of the other reality shows in existence, people do not have to humilate themselves to succeed.
And there's actual talent involved. That the only winner I have ever liked was Kelly Clarkson is beside the point.
Now, of course, people are humiliating themselves with singing worse than mine. But the difference is that we won't have to watch those people the rest of the season.
Whether they succeed or whether they fail, these people went after a dream and that's something to be proud of. So much of the world never does. Now it does make me wonder how the hopeful's friends could let them go ahead without a Simon Cowell-like reality check early.
And though I feel for a few of the reject loser boys and girls (the high age range is now 28 though - which is a good thing) they knew what could happen and it's the fault of the aforementioned "friends."
I maintain that some of the failures are clearly actors, people put in for comic relief and nothing more. I refuse to believe that someone can turn up looking like a reject from the short bus and then do their best impression of a foghorn in an earthquake.
Toni Braxton's cousin? - annoying? Damn but "he" was annoying.
Constantine- the rocker dude. Well, I knew he was going to sing Aerosmith (cryin'). He was really hard to gauge as he was singing in such a different style from everyone else - no dead Motown. They gave him a chance and moved him on.
Paula Abdul? Fake boobs. Fake lips. She looks worse thna she ever did. She has a Dame Edna Everage purse of the lips going on.
Dream on. Dream on.
Sing with me
Sing for the year
Sing for the laughter
And sing for the tear
Sing with me
If it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow
The good lord will take you away

Older people get humiliated better, and take rejection worse, I think.

Well, they've lived with the dream longer.

every time i watch the first episodes of this show, i find myself thinking "are people really this stupid?....they actually think they can sing?"
i suppose the answer is probably "yes".

I was totally diggin on Constantine, his style was so unique, and not to mention he's HOT! Then there's Toni Braxton's cousin, LIAR! There was really only one contestant whom I was feelin from the Saint Louis auditions and that was the guy wearing the hat, he sang a Stevie Wonder song (I don't remember his name.)

I've been trying to think of something witty to say about Temple's name. The best I can come up with is that it sounds like the plaint of a troglodyte who's failed to assemble a minyan. I trust his junior high classmates did better.

p.s. I'll take Showtime at the Apollo any day. Except for the comics.
