A Live Launch And Some Rocking Goodness

Part of: Marty's Musical Meltdown

After the paucity of releases heading my way over the last few weeks, I am overwhelmed by releases both with labels and without. I got seven demo discs at a music web-site launch I attended last week.

First off let me report on the launch of Tourdates.co.uk a week ago yesterday. It was an impressive launch with oddles of hopeful bands and a quartet of Tourdates fave rock bands. Overall it was an impressive live edge adding to the fun of the launch. It would surprise no one that the place was filled thanks to an open bar for the first few hours. VIPs, of which Kim (my fiance), John my bandmate, Perry Benson the actor, and I were but four, got free drinks the entire night. After the event we all retired to Gerry's private bar to continue the evening and have a natter about the bands we saw.

First band up was the remnants of Stiff Kittens, the rather good Matatabi, who put on a cracking performance of new material for the rapidly filling audience. Murdoc and Void delivered confident and competent sets for the gathered hordes. Last was Dirt Baby who John continued to rave about late into the night; I was inclined to agree with his assessment. Thanks to our host Dean for a cracking night.

Now all I have to do is wade through the seven CDs, which range in quality, I was given by various hopefulls including the aforementioned Matatabi.

CD Reviews:

Mower: Not For You

This lot produce a heady mix of punk, metal, and rock with hardcore vocals but do not necessarily fall into the metalcore genre. It would be unfair to lump them into that grouping of bands; they're far more clever than that. They have toured extensively with many different bands and it clearly shows on this CD.

This is tight and very professional; none of your do-it-yourself shitty sound can be found here. With stuff like "American Psycho", based on the movie of the same name, and material like "Broken Hands," they show they can do introspective less-heavy stuff as well with class. Heaviness abounds on the Sabbath-esque "The End." There is a lot to offer here and the album should have a lot of legs. Need I suggest you check em' out live ASAP?
