22 Greatest MCs - Comments Page 4

Anyone catch MTV's 22 Greatest MCs show? The moment they announced number 22 I knew we were gonna have beef. Their list was the result of a public poll, so I have to give a little slack given all the youngsters that likely voted.

    Jack,

What does any of that have to do with Dr. Dre as a RAPPER? The things you mentioned would count towards his rep as a producer. And for what it's worth, Dre is on my honorable mention list.

Here's a few that would probably make it on to my list if I had the time to organize one properly. Kool Moe Dee, Kool Keith, Rakim, Chuck D, Brother J, Mos Def, Big Daddy Kane, Black Thought, Andre 3000, Guru, Aceyalone, Ice Cube, Ice T, Nas, Gift of Gab, B-Real, D.O.C., Krs-One, Kurtis Blow, Slick Rick, Del, Q-Tip, Snoop, Busta Rhymes, and of course Biggie and Tupac and the immortal RUN-DMC! I might also consider LL Cool J for longevity, maybe Eminem, and personal favorites such as Paris, Too Short, El-P, Dres from Black Sheep and my man Sensational! Respect to all the others I've forgotten.

Wait a second there, pardner. Don't the terms "greatest" and "MC" form an oxymoron if used together?

Jeez, people will rank anything these days, no matter how trivial and inappropriate.

    The 22 Greatest Belches.

I posted my last two comments out of anger and before i read this forum. I have since gone back and read the entire forum. I'll try not to get too involved but I respect everybody's personal opinion. Like what you want too like. I'm not trying to convert anybody to my beliefs of who is the greatest. But I cannot understand how any fan of rap or hip hop cannot consider Tupac a top 5 on every list ever created. We are talking about a rapper who died at 25 years old in 1996 and who sold platinum every year from 1992 - 2004. More than sales; The average East COast rapper rap about rapping, always trying to prove they are a better MC than the next man (is that not 50% of KRS and Rakims lyrics)Pac has a song about every situation, every human emotion. Versatility, Melodious, uplifting lyrics, and Gangsta Lyrics...Pac was more than just a thug he was one of the smartest black men of my generation. He taught rappers how to make money; "Don't make mainstream music for the niggaz make music for the bytches cuz the bytches gone buy yo shyt and the niggaz gone buy whatever the bytches like"

    I'm already getting too involved.

My other point--A persons preference in music is predominatley driven by their geographic location, and how they come up (poor, middle class, upper class)...FOr example if you from Brooklyn then Brooklyn rappers would dominate your list. I'm from New Orleans and as much as the East coast would like to right off our music they still are currently trying to imitate our music.

I have seen some interesting points as well as some completley ignorant ones. I'm not hating but damn I've only seen three people from the south represented Outkast, Scarface, and Mystikal... It's cool though because it would do me no good to explain the contributions of UGK (Bun-B one of the top 20 all time), Juvenile, BG, 8Ball&MJG, Soulja SLim, DJ Screw n dem.... But no matter because even though the South drop music that hold the country's attention for months the rest of the country still underappreciate. Does anybody remember Juveniles 400 degreez that album came out in 1998 with the single "HA" and rocked until 2000 with the single "Back that A$$ up" that is a two year run on one album. On top of that the two commercial songs don't do the album justice. As for UGK this is a group known and respected nation wide without even a major video or big time single.

In conclusion we can agree to disagree but in the opinion of myself and an extrmley dispropotionate segment of the hip hop fans Tupac is hands down the greatest of all time whether its Live Performance, Creativity, Lyrical content, Rhyme Scheme, respect, acting, book smarts, political activism, leadership,... Yeah he talked a lot of shyt but thats why he loved so much because we respect his mind he knew how to make you feel his work same level as Marvin Gaye, Stevie WOnder, Whitney Houston, No other rapper in history has been as influential on his generation as the THUG. I can't help it I'm involved. 9 out of 10 celebrities actors, musicians, entrepeneurs, poltiticans, athletes, grandparents, foreigners, convicts, religious leaders, know who 2 Pac is and even if they under some false impression of exactly who he was or what he represented they still have to respect the young man for coming out of the gutter and making something out of nothing talented. That man is the God of 90's music. How many artists have come back and tried to rewrite songs to their mothers, or positive songs to females, or letters to their children, or songs to speak to the president, or tried to prophesize their death, or compared the rap game to the crack game, or called their gun their girlfriend, or try to gain attention by claiming they was shot and still couldnt be stopped, and screaming Thug, Ride or Die, and Str8 Balling. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

    I need to stop...
Back to my other point the East Coast ran rap in the 80's-- the West coast ran rap in the early 90's (until right after Pac died) then the SOuth took over in 1997 and the SOuth been running it ever since. Now the East Coast trying to back into the game by making SOuth sounding songs like Lean Back & Head Sprung. The East music didnt used to sound like that even KRS-1 probably shaking his head at how far the East Coast fell -- The country love the SOuths flavor, Its cool though; keep making your lists I'm not disrespecting only offering an alternative perspective, like they say just keep an Open Mind.

I agree that you're too involved. Look, this list is just my opinion -- something I threw together after seeing that show over a year ago. As far as I'm concerned one could make a valid argument for probably any of 20 or so different people to be #1. It never ceases to amaze me how you Tupac lovers get so upset because somebody doesn't have him as #1. Deal with it -- people have different tastes. I don't now, nor have I ever intended this list to be nothing else but my own personal preference.

You said the same thing in your post that I said throughout mine; Everybody has their own opinion; So I expressed mine and now I'm done with it.
Anytime somebody can list the top ten rappers of all time-- not to mention the post from "Adero" who listed 35 rappers without mentioning Tupac; it aint worth debating. I'm out.

You should have called your list MTV's top 22 MC's of all time. There are so many MC's out there that overshadow all of these fools. Anyone heard of Lyrics Born or Lateef the Truth Speaker? What about Gift of Gab? Del the Funkee Homosapien? What about international MC's like Jehst or Baron Samedi of the UK? They both could rip 90% of your list to shreds. Listen to some real hip hop before you go wasting your time making ridiculous lists.

Roots Manuva is on my list. See #20

  • 148 - Eric Berlin

This is a sweet list that I'm just getting to right now. I have to agree with E. Olsen on the not quite getting with the KRS-One bandwagon (maybe it's because I was introduced to him via the worst REM song of all time, "Radio Song"?).

Jurassic 5 would be in my Top 10 as each part of the crew adds an incredible piece to the phenomenal whole. Dr. Dre, Chuck D, Rakim, Run DMC and Eminem (on pure talent) would be in my Top 5.

MTV's pairing of Tupac and Biggie at #1 and #2, in my opinion, is just silly.

Beastie Boys would also be in my Top 10... but then again I'm a Jewish white boy raised in New York!

Wow yall have the be the dumbest motherf'ers and yall don't deserve to listen to rap

Pac n Big took the game to another level....all them other motherfukers tried with out any success

no one gave a shit about hip hop really until they came around...Run DMC, Rhakim n KRS were good but being consided the best and toppin biggie n pac is downright stupid

all should be talking about how eminem is ranked to high or Jay-Z but since all don't know shit about hiphop n rap i don't blame ya for yallz weak ass lists.......

good job MTV for at least getting the top two right

    1. 2pac
    2. Biggie

Firstoff, I dont kno why every one besides teh "hard core 2pac fans" label him as a pop act? Yes its true that Pac has said few stupid shit , but common he was 25 when he passed away....the guy was not even fully matured yet. And as far as the ranking goes, I WOULD PUT HIM AS THE #1 EMCEE OF ALL TIME (no offence to KRS/BIG/Big L/rakim). When most ppl hear of Pac ...they think of the Deathrow Rapper who rapped about nothing but "bitches" "jewel" "money " ..n so on. What most ppl fail to notice/ or are not aware of is teh fact taht 2pac was already n established rapper b4 he joined Deathrow. All im saying is that the reason mtv named pac as being the top emcee of all time is probably cuz of the song california love....n im 100% shure , the majority of tupac's fans see him as a gangbanging money lovin "nigga"...n it just kills me cuz, He was soo much more than that. I mean how can u not reconize the guys skills. He was soo much more than your avrage rapper.....the passion he put into his stuff was beyong crazy....even in his deathrow days, pac did nothign but work on the booth (when most of deathrow rappers put out albums every 3-4 years)...tell me another rapper of the same time who was even close to being as "commited" with his /her lyrics as pac was?....and as far as lyrical content goes....pac rapped more about politics and every day struggles than ne other rapper.....its just that the majority of public only wana hear more of the comercial stuff...sorry about the spelling/grammer errors (i noticed some of u guys dont like readin stuff that hasnt gone through a spell check)....and finally here is my list of top 5 rappers of all time

    1. Pac(carismatic,passionate,amazing delivery, and inovative)
    2. Biggie (sick flow, amazing puns and metaphors)
3 Rakim (poetic content is huge ....he did that one song only with multies)
    4.Eminem (creativity, convincing flow)
5.3 way tie between Big L, Chuck D, Icecube

Well, this is old, glad someone brought it frward again.

Sorry I skipped past all the "I think my weeny is smaller than yours" back and forth (kind of a dry-humpin) for beginners, but why Run-DMC total as an MC top 25.

There is a diff between rappers and MCs. I have MTVs "25 large" recorded where many rappers st around peer-grouping the tops. That was from about 2003, 2002 as well.

"Back to my other point the East Coast ran rap in the 80's-- the West coast ran rap in the early 90's (until right after Pac died) then the SOuth took over in 1997 and the SOuth been running it ever since."
Are u crazzzzzy? south has never been close to being as popular as teh east coast. Tell me more than 4-5 southern rapper that get regular airplays.? oviously u must have not been aware of the whole wu-tang, Bad boy, Defjam dinesty right after pac died. Alotta Eastcoast rappers got their share of the lime light after pac n biggie died....hell the whole "durty south" sound was not even heard of untin 2001-2002. And even then, south does not have ne fan base outside of the southern coast of Us. Where as East coast rap is heard all around the globe. Like if u were u ask a kid from India who Jay-Z or even Fat Joe is...the chances are theyll be able to answer. On the other hand not alot of ppl like/ or even kno most southern rappers .....aside from the ppl who actually live in that area ofcource. The whole "look at the gold in my mouth, or look at my white T-shirt" is just plain stupid .....most of the southern music ive listened to soo far....there is no thought put into the lyrics....there too literal...n haf the words they use are words which have no meaning ...there just made up at the spot cuz they rhyme. compare the best of south to the best of east....u can clearly see how much shittier south is.

I don't buy into the whole East VS West
VS South thing. The rivalries are for the
large part a marketing ploy by labels &
promo men to sell records. My favorite
MC's are largely East Coast & MIdwest.

But, this because I like a lot of old
school and the scene started back east
in NYC and then broke out in Philly, etc.
    I like Kool G Rap & DJ Polo,Jungle Bros,
Biz Markie (why ain't HE listed here?),
    Big Daddy Kane,Run DMC,BDP,Marley Marl,
    Eric B. & Rakim,Schooly D.,Public Enemy,
    Afrika Bambaata,Ultra Magnetic MC's,KRS
One and all that shit because it's good
not just because of where they are from.

Most of my favorite new Hip-Hop is from
the Mid-West,West Coast and down South
in the dirty dirty because they have a
great sound going & these areas aren't
trying to sound like each other. Most of
the MC's listed here are listed because
of popularity first and skills second it
seems. If they had just listed because
of skills they would have had a lot more
underground people that a lot of folks
who are into Eminem and commercial shit
like that never heard of,even though it
is the kind of material that Eminem
listens to for ideas for his music. But
lists are all subjective to the personal
taste of the person who makes the list &
    they don't mean SHIT.

    Hold Up Playa:

You tripping; Master P (garbage as a rapper on all levels) sold over 40 million records after Pac died. Outkast started selling 6 million an album, Cash Money (Juvenile) has sold over 15 million records since Pac died, T.I., Scarface, Lil Jon, UGK.... Da South's sound can be heard in every main stream song that comes out of New York... Go watch any top 10 videoes list on any channel and just listen to the music and the composition of the songs and compare it to the songs that came out of the East or West before 1995. Why in the hell do you think Wu-Tang fell off, because they can't grab and hold their audiences attention no mo.

Ok, I couldnt help but read all that old shit in here and want to comment on it seen as though its all about Pac was the best or Pac talked shit as he said one thing and totally contradicted himself with his actions....So im from Australia and we believe it or not are very similar to america now.... we have a large racism issue among the youth between black and white....street gangs are beginning to emerge and its only now that our generation be cranking all the old skool pac shit, I mean 9 out of ten cars we seee cruisin are pumpin "ghetto gospel" or "hail mary" so I just wanna say that i got black mum and white dad so i definatly aint biased when i say all you haters on pac i see from those redneck "I hate enything that's black and moves, talkin bout all that don't try say ure smart cuz its juvenile when they are totally tryna show off with all their gramma and punctuation bullshit claiming they from ghetto kentucky n shit.....Let me tell ya right now kidbrains of course you faget farm cowboys are gonna say that pac was shit and this and that ....Believe me u dont know wtf you talking about kid. Has it ever gone through your so called "educated" brains that maybe some peeps that have it hard will relate allot more to pac ....now i live in a seperate counrty from the U.S and i can say with total honesty there aint a kid in perth that aint know the name 2pac, the guy was a living fukin legend and the shit rappers be puttin out today isnt worth a drip of semen from a donkeys foreskin...coz nobody out this way feeling it. When pac died hiphop died i mean yer there was some great albums released after his death but what hiphop is today saddens me cuz its not like we gotta choice nomore. You gotta choose which is the best from all these fake bullshit artists that why nobody this way even cops eny new stuff we still be pumpin the old shit and i dont think we'll ever adopt this new "I'm a thug i swear, see i put lots of peeps up in my video they my gang even tho i had to pay em" I know people got they own styles n shit yer they tryna bring they own sound out but man i wouldnt be suprised if this whole genre died withing 5 -10 years. Its not about tryna reach out to ppl nomore, its about look at my cash and the chains weighing my neck down. You think becoz you wearin big jewellery that makes your rhymes half decent....snoop is the biggest fuckin sellout i ever seen he sing like a bitch yet hes a crip yo im a crip but i sing like im sukin a dick. Pac was the most influental music icon i think ever lived and it really is sad what direction the shit took when he passed.

First and foremost, Don't Ever put Tupac Shakur in the same sentence as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.

Its so funny how all of you are complete ends of the spectrum. But after reading this whole list of comments (well almost), from an unbiased stance, it seems Tupac is influential enough for all of you to take so much time to talk about. Tupac was the greatest rapper of all time. The emotion he conveyed is unparallelled (hear My Block (remix). That said, KRS is the greatest MC of all time. Please, make the distinction between rapper and MC.

Oh ya, and i read somewhere that Tupac was an uneducated dumbass. Pleassse. At age 6, his punishment for misbehaving was to read a whole issue of the New York Times from start to end to his mother. That must have been of some help. And has any one EVER heard of underground rappers such as Immortal Technique, Jin etc. Today, Immortal technique is the greatest MC still making music. Please don't shoot me for saying this. I am just expressing an opinion. Ill be more than happy to discuss.

Pac, Biggie, Jigga, Nas,Eminem are influential...
Canibus, Copyrght, Eminem, Immortal Technique are thoroughbred lyricist that will eat niggaz alive..My two favorite of all time are Jigga and Canibus..PAC is a legend and so is Biggie.....It all boils down to preference..Jigga speaks about the struggles we face today as young men and women trying to get paid and live like kings in modern society.. Canibus is a raw lyricist who has no equal..they way he spits is crazy...."Sitting on chrome, sitting on low pro 20-inch Firestones gripping the road with the wickedest flow..Bis is a pro" that's dope my people....hectically dope..I'm from South Africa and we are as much hip hop heads as anyone.....

Yo why is everbody making the list a big ass deal the list means nothing. No one is ever gonna follow by some peoples list because people got different opinions. Like i think some rappers that should have been on there. It really dont matter to me about whos on top because theres basically is no best in rap period because theres good rapper but not one rapper could be good at everything am i right. u see the krs one rakim 2pac biggie nas jay z a tribe called quest de la soul to nwa to mos def to talib kweli to wu tang clan and basically none of them are the same the thing that is the same about these rappers or these rap groups are they influenced hip hop in there own ways. They brought new styles and originality and put it out and to make me feel good about hip hop to make everybody feel good about hip hop. hip hop is kinda f up right now because of all the commercial stuff but somebodys gonna have to bring out a total different style from what all these rappers are doing the same to show the new era of hip hop and leave the past as the past. i mean its good to see rakim and krs one to come back wit some hot tracks but its nice to see some new cats wit there own style. thats what changed hip hop was all the new rappers coming out wit records that were so orginal and classic material hopefully it will come back to rap is not all about selling drugs to talk about killing all the time. i mean its an interesting topic but so many rappers do it and most of them do suck and compeletly whack. well thats what i got to say and hopefully u can see what im saying peace

YO THE ONLY PPL STANDIN UP FOR BIGS FUNERAL WERE THE NIGGAZ IN NEW YORK...HAHAH DATS IT...BIG IS A ONE DIMENSIONAL RAPPER WHO KNOWS HOW 2 SPELL HIS NAME AND MAKE IT RHYME GOOD (GOOD 4 U BIG) but guess what i can spell my name and make it rhyme haha pac is the greatest of all time...Big copied pac;s style and wouldnt b n e where without pac...pac made him pac destroyed him (hit em up, Holla at me) Big couldnt even respond/..and for the people who say Big didnt respond because he thought he didnt need to hahah its cause he COULDNT...hit em up was a fuckin massacre and biggie was embarasse and speachless...and HOW good can you be with Deutch Daddy CMON...why dont u fools go look at the list of who is the greatest rapper of all time voted by the fans and not made up by sum MTV dudes of who is the greatest rapper of all time...go ahead and google the shit pac is at the top of every mutha fuckin list...he came n showed his respect to the old school and then fuckin killed the new school...so if u guys wanna u know talk about biggie being the best thats cool...hes the best in his realm whateva.....dont mention pac in the same category cause no nigga can touch him he on a whole different playing field..EZZZ.
what makes someone the greatest rapper of all time? albums sales?=2pac! lyrics?=2pac! biggest legacy?=2pac! "pac is the greatest ever! biggie was amazin, no doubt... but 1 album alive, 2 good albums ever? fuck that.. that ain't good enough to be the best EVER! He copyed alot of 2pac's style on ready to die without evening giving him a shout out. when true RAP(Rythme and poetry) fans say 2pac is the best rapper ever they mean passion, lyrics, meaning and keeping real. When people say biggie is the best they mean, flow. ''B.I.G P.O.P.P.A NO INFO FOR THE D.E.A'' great to listen to but no where the near the level of skill involed in 2pacs lyrics. R.I.P one love

    OH YEAH AND,
To Tupac's haters, it is not his fault that he is the greatest of all time. It is mine and that of millions and millions around the globe. Pac never used to even call himself the greatest in his lyrics like most elite MCs do. He only used to say he was the realest rapper. He even showed respect to the likes of LL and Rakim on the song Old School. So don't hate on him, hate on the fans who have elevated him to the legendary figure he is. In the country Kenya, his legacy supercedes that of all other musicians regardless of music genre, including Michael Jackson. Only reggae king, Bob Marley comes close to Shakur.
A lot of people do not make the difference between a favourite rapper and the greatest rapper of all time. See, your favourite rapper does not necessarily qualify to be the greatest of all time. For example Mike Tyson is my favourite boxer but the fact is that Muhammad Ali and Rocky Marciano are the greatest pugilists of all time. The greatest rapper therefore is the one with the biggest fan base, it does not matter whether you like him or not. Rakim, Nas, Jigga, Eminem, Biggie and KRS-One are legendary rappers, but they do not command the following Tupac Amaru Shakur does. So even if Pac may not be your favourite rapper, you got to accept the fact that he has a million times the fan base of your favourite rapper worldwide. Tupac is the G.O.A.T of hip hop, if you didn't know, now you know.

    P.S.
YO THYS GOES OUT 2 ALL THEM OH HATIN AZZZ HOEZ LIKE ALBERT(GO SUCK YA DADDY DICK), MICHAEL(U BE SAYIN' SOME MOST OF THE DUMBSHYT EVA. YO JUST SHUT THA FUCK AND DO NOT POST ANYTHING ELSE ON THYS BOARD), AL BARGER(YO B YA FUCKIN SLEEP U REALLY NEED 2 WAKE YA AZZ UP), D.TANSY(U ONE STUPID AZZ GUTT BUCKET.)
