The 48th Annual Grammy Awards will air live on CBS on Wednesday night, February 8, 2006. This year’s show looks to have some very good performances... and some awards will be handed out too. Now, I bring you my predictions on who will take home the only music award artists crave:
Record Of The Year
"We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey
"Feel Good Inc." by Gorillaz feat. De La Soul
"Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" by Green Day
"Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani
"Gold Digger" by Kanye West feat. Jamie Foxx
My Thoughts: Damn, this is a tough category. You couldn't avoid any of those songs in 2005 even if you tried. "Hollaback Girl" was the rare "pop" song to cross over to R&B/hip-hop radio. "We Belong Together" was the perfect crossover single and even the "best R&B and old school" station in Chicago played "Gold Digger." In the end, though, it's really a two-person race between Kanye and Mariah.
Will Win: "We Belong Together"
It'd Be Cool If This Won Instead: "Feel Good Inc."
I Wish This Was Nominated: "Let Me Love You" by Mario
Album Of The Year
The Emancipation Of Mimi by Mariah Carey
Chaos And Creation In The Backyard by Paul McCartney
Love.Angel.Music.Baby by Gwen Stefani
How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb by U2
Late Registration by Kanye West
My Thoughts: Kanye wants this award bad. However, he might not get it. There are so many variables here. There's Mariah Carey's comeback album, U2's supposed "best album in years" (which was also said of Paul McCartney's album), and Gwen Stefani's "something for everyone" album. Will the Grammy voters give Kanye his wish? I think they will... but Mariah and U2 are going to be nipping at his heels.
Will Win: Late Registration
It'd Be Cool If This Won Instead: How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
I Wish These Were Nominated: Get Lifted by John Legend, Demon Days by Gorillaz, Get Behind Me Satan by The White Stripes
Song Of The Year
"Bless The Broken Road" written by Bobby Boyd, Jeff Harris, & Marcus Hummon (performed by Rascal Flatts)
"Devils And Dust" written by Bruce Springsteen (performed by Bruce Springsteen)
"Ordinary People" written by W. Adams and J. Stephens (performed by John Legend)
"Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" written by U2 (performed by U2)
"We Belong Together" written by J. Austin, M. Carey, J. Dupri, and M. Seal (performed by Mariah Carey)

Outstanding job Sterfish!
My knowledge of pop music is severely limited these days, but I nod in aggreement to your takes on Gorillaz, Beck, and The White Stripes, all of whom turned in outstanding releases this year.

Awesome picks, Sterfish, and I think you've pretty much nailed them. The only one I'm not as sure as you are about is Kanye West's Late Registration. The academy seems to really like Mariah this year.

I think Mariah is too lightweight and Kanye is too controversial. My prediction is a Gwen (for the reason you sited, "something for everyone") or a U2 win (for a pretty similar reason). Kanye could win but I sort of doubt it.
I loved the Beck album and am really disappointed it didn't get more run.

I'm not a big Mariah fan, so I'm hoping she doesn't run away with too many awards. Not that it is anticipated, but I would like to see Green Day recognized for the work they've done over the last year - competition is a little stiff in that category. I would have also like to have seen Rob Thomas get some recognition for his work as well. I'm so not a big Kelly Clarkson fan, either.
Most of your other predictions are probably spot-on based on what I have seen, heard, and read in the polling statistics. I'm an early Kraftwerk fan but I haven't heard this latest release. I'm debating on whether to tune in to the awards or not.
Very good post - very well written and presented!

What the hell is wrong with all of you?
Did any of you listen to Bob Dylans new album, 'Modern Times'??
This is a masterpiece and it cannot even be compared to the useless teeny bopper pop put out by such bands as the black eyed peas and gwen stefani.
You're all musically retarded if you can't agree that Dylan's new album is clearly more sophisticated and intense than any of the above mentioned albums could ever be. Shame on all of you.

Okay I know my comments are like a year old but I must say, Mariah Carey totally deserved all those awards. I watched the Grammys that night and say who won. You would not believe it. U2 won everything yeah thats right everything. The point I am getting too is that Mariah Carey has the right to sue them and did not. If you go to www.youtube.com and put in Mariah Carey look for one that says something about Mariah and Barbara Walters, you will find that even though Mariah didnt win the album of the year she had the best album of the year. This is true because Barbara did her research and found out that somehow they made a mistake with the numbers. At the grammys they said Mariah was only 6 times platinum, but when Barbara looked into it they were severly and utterly wrong Mariah Carey had actually been 13 times platinum more then twice what they said. Now here is a note if Mariah had just been 7 times platinum she would have won everything what does that say about the system.
The only thing I am curious about is why isnt she sueing.
