2003 VMA's - Chosen By Me

The nominees for the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA’s) have been released. In honor of that, I would like to go over who I think should win and why. That’s right, I am naming myself “the academy” for these awards. What are you going to do about it? I didn’t choose every category, because I don’t really care about cinematography, editing, etc.

Video Of The Year
50 Cent, "In Da Club"
Eminem, "Lose Yourself"
Johnny Cash, "Hurt"
Justin Timberlake, "Cry Me a River"
Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, "Work It"

Craig’s Winner - Eminem - “Lose Yourself” - There is no way this video should lose. I am barely even a rap fan and I saw this video probably 30 times. And, how many times did you hear the song this year? Exactly! I wanted to vote for Johnny Cash because that video is cool, but it isn’t the video of the year unless he dies before the awards. Then out of respect we should give it to him.

Best Male Video
50 Cent, "In Da Club"
Eminem, "Lose Yourself"
John Mayer, "Your Body is a Wonderland"
Johnny Cash, "Hurt"
Justin Timberlake, "Cry Me a River"

Craig’s Winner - 50 Cent - “In Da Club” - I mean come on how many times did he get shot? The video was completely pervasive. I would like nothing more than to give the award to a rock band or something, but in this case, it can’t be done. John Mayer, please stop your Dave Matthews impressions. We only need one marbles in his mouth balladeer with happy feet.

Best Female Video
Avril Lavigne, "I'm With You"
Beyonce f/ Jay-Z, "Crazy in Love"
Christina Aguilera, "Dirrty"
Jennifer Lopez, "I'm Glad"
Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, "Work It"

Craig’s Winner - Christina Aguilera - “Dirrty” - I will admit that this is just my man-ness speaking. Her transformation from a “Genie in a Bottle” to hooker in a boxing ring, won her this award. Her parents will be proud.

hmmm... I don't know. I'd love to comment, but I've only seen "Hurt" (because I don't have cable. haha)... but "Hurt" was an amazing video, so I think I would probably choose it in which ever categories it was nominated for. That was made even more powerful watching it after Johnny Cash's wife died.

Other than that, I like The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age, Missy Elliott, and NAS, but I have no clue what the videos are like.

    peace.

Don't you have to show videos to have a Video Show Music Award?

I've only seen "Hurt" once, because it's not really MTV-material, but I'd give the video at least one award. I don't even know much of Johnny Cash, but the song had me paralyzed after about three seconds.

Hey, I understand your complaint about the featuring thing (ie: Santana @ Grammies a few years back)(especially all those hip hop ones--everyone and their mom's doing it) but that Roots song is pretty darn good.

As for Queens of the Stone Age, video wise, I much prefer Go With The Flow (that video is brilliant!) and feel it should have been nominated over No One Knows.

The Scientist is a great song, good video, but how does the girl crash through the front windshield AFTER the car makes several rolls down a hill?!?

i suspect "No One Knows" got nominated instead of "Go With The Flow" because everyone has heard the song No One Knows and is familiar with it.

    peace.

A friend of mine asked me an interesting question the other day after reading this post. I need all the blogcritics brethren to help me because I don't know the answer. What is the difference between Rap and Hip-Hop

I mean there are rappers in both categories. All I could think of is the sound. Hip hop has more melody and usually a singer, or something.

Let me know what you know.

In my understanding, hip-hop refers to a style of beat and composition - rap is someone rapping, typically over a hip-hop beat.

Of course Nelly is going to win. He is so hot. He is off the chain. I don't know why they didn't nominate him for it all.

In the rock category, i think that Linkin Park's "Somewhere I Belong" should of been switched with their latest hit, "Faint"

"Move Bitch" by Ludacris,Mystikal, and I20 isn't actually about young, black men abusing women. It's about young black men telling people to get the hell out of the way when they're driving
recklessly down a highway. Just listen to the lyrics.

(after show)I'm a fan of linkin park, but I thought White Stripes deserved best rock video much more. I love coldplay! but they should have did clocks cause it was an upbeat ceremony. (Although I love "the scientist")...hmmm...

rap is a music style, hip hop is a lifestyle.

rap and hip-hop are the same. (hey, at least it's better than hearing the same arguments I've been hearing for years.)

In any case... in response to:
"If you are so desperate that you need to have someone else carry your artistic load with a guest spot, I will not allow you to win."

I hope you know it's more about collaboration than it is about lack of artistic talent. That Common song is beautiful, and visualsimplicity has covered The Seed 2.0

    Otherwise, great commentary!

Have to disagree with mars. Saying that rap and hip-hop are the saying is like saying coughing is having a cold. One is simply a symptom of the other not an embodiment.

    Aug 29, 2003 at 1:46 pm

You are correct, breaking is hip hop, but it's not rap. Beat box is hip-hop, but it isn't rap. etc

But I've seen so many countless people try to identify the difference between the two terms that it's just laughable. That's why i say they are the same. I'm tired of the same old arguments. Plus, I don't know how many times I've heard people say "I listen to hip-hop", so who makes the rules, you know? Semantic disputes are just pointless anyway.

Now circumlocution, that's the way to go.

While we're clarifying, can someone tell me the points of distinction between house and hip-hop music?

  • 23 - The Theory

    Aug 29, 2003 at 4:28 pm

"house", i believe, is a form of electronica/dance which is pretty much unrelated to hiphop.

  • 24 - Eric Olsen

    Aug 29, 2003 at 9:01 pm

Unless you're talking about the hybrid hip-house that was popular in the late-'80s and early '90s. If you speed up a hip-hop beat it could sound like house.
