Since we're writing lists at Blogcritics these days, here's mine. It's not a "best-of" or anything, it's just 10 random albums from my collection.
Burning Witch - Crippled Lucifer
Excellent compilation of material from this underrated doom metal band. Makes Black Sabbath sound like a boy band.
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Starts off with a sample from Exorcist III, ends with a sample from Army of Darkness, and in between it's sheer chaos. Albums like this make me wish I had invested in Darren's Dance Grooves, so that I might do his patented "pop and lock" routine to the sweet, sweet sounds of "Slit Your Guts" and :Orgiastic Disembowelment."
Disrupt - Unrest
One of the best hardcore albums of the 90, from one of the best bands to ever come out of Boston. I'd give my right arm for a Disrupt reunion.
Earth - Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars
My girlfriend threatened to break up with me if I ever played this album in her presence again. The first track starts off with an agonizingly slow cover of the opening of "Free Bird" and then just degenerates into droning guitars. The other four tracks on the album come closer to being actual songs, but not but much. Great fun at parties, especially if you don't like anyone who's in attendance.
Exhumed - Slaughtercult
They sound like Carcass, and part of their stage act includes a bass player who vomits on command. What's not to love?
Mayhem - Live in Leipzig
Raw, vicious black metal from one of the most important bands in the genre. The sound quality is not the best, but the songs are great, and front man Dead shrieks the lyrics like a man possessed. The album is terrifying, and yet strangely beautiful at the same time. Sort of like a vagina with teeth.
