Music Review: Taylor Hicks on American Idol

The Soul Patrolman “reported for duty” on AI5′s April 11 show.
The American Idol 5 contestant with the runaway rampant fan base that’s putting all other contestant AI boards to shame, delivered what his fans had begged for all the previous week; he tore up the Idol stage.

The silver-maned Soulman’s passionate performances have drawn rave reviews from his fans and criticisms from his detractors. He is an acquired taste and not for the faint of heart — most likely the folks who don’t understand his dance moves or his appeal probably would have been in the crowd that derided Elvis Presley in his early days. (You know The King had his own ‘spaztastic’ moves that caught plenty of criticism…)

Taylor Hicks chose the frolicky, fun Queen song “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and turned it into a dynamic high energy performance. Simon Cowell previously had been interviewed as saying he was afraid that Hicks could possibly be voted the next American Idol. (Be afraid Simon, very afraid…) After the April 11th endeavor by Hicks, Simon looked positively pale. Cowell managed to sputter how he thought the performance was “ridiculous”, and he asked Hicks, “Are you drunk?” I could see how it may be difficult for Simon to imagine being as forceful and passionate as Hicks clearly demonstrates he is – while being sober…

[ADBLOCKHERE]Currently, there are rumors in circulation that in fact, American Idol, 19E and Cowell may be in bed together to try and influence the public to seat rocker Chris Daughtry as the next contestant to be crowned Idol. Conspiracy theories are not new to this runaway popular program and have besieged it throughout its five year history with the exception of the first year. I must add, rumors are just that: “Rumours.” (Great Fleetwood Mac album – oops my A.D.D. side surfacing!)

Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul were the two judges who passed Taylor through and enabled him to get to where he is in the current standings. The Taylor Hicks fan boards ripped after his performance Tuesday night like Neon. Check out e.Bay, Dial Idol or any of the gambling on Idol betting sites, the numbers on Taylor Hicks are steadily rising, steadily on top, not to yet be matched by anyone in the competition with exception of Miss Pick-Pickler. Kellie is holding her own — this gal may not act like she knows what a ‘ballsy’ is but she definitely has a brass pair. (AI5 watchers and fans, do not underestimate this little gal. She is a 500 lb. tiger in a 100 lb. girl body. Seriously.)

Back to my favorite topic — Taylor Hicks. So gorgeous, complete with spot-on vocals; I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, the force, the energy, the very Big Cahones he is obviously endowed with to enable him to pull off the type of performances he delivers to the American Idol stage. He is “The Mack Daddy” and the force to be reckoned with on American Idol this year. Dance critics, 19E and AI5 be damned.

Groove on Soulman!

Now it is time for a whole new group of Idol wanna-be’s. I am curious regarding how this next season will be compared to last. Every year the number of viewers has steadily risen and the fan bases for the winners have grown more passionate and intense about their favorites. Devotion to the winner rose to a thunderous crescendo with Taylor Hicks. He’s still commanding a fierce following.

This past season we saw that not only the winners can gain record deals. How this turn of events motivates the contestants will remain to be seen.

How about that Jennifer Hudson? Proud of that gal.

Regarding Renee’s stellar viewpoint of Taylor Hicks, I think the fact that Taylor Hicks’ CD has gone platinum speaks as to his popularity. News of this has reached fans via the Gray Charles blogsite, the Official Taylor Hicks blog. This is impressive and stands to confirm Mr. Hicks’ fanbase, considering sales of this number have been achieved without the benefit of radio play and the CD was released just five weeks ago.

There have been comparisons made between Taylor Hicks’ CD sales and Chris Daughtry’s CD, with to date, Daughtry carrying higher sales numbers. Rational comparisons should include the fact Daughtry’s CD came out in November, weeks prior to Taylor Hicks’ release. Reviewing the time line, both hit platinum within about the same period of time their albums hit the charts. This again puts in mind whether we will see American Idol taking a different twist in this upcoming season. I’ll reiterate, what will be the drive to be number one when you can be a raging success at number 4? Of course talent and appeal are enormous factors.

actually the whole ‘platinum’ status is really a joke for taylor. if you are going by units shipped then sure, taylor is platinum. if you go by units sold which is really more important, he is about half of that. Chris Daughtry has SOLD almost 1.5 million and his single is rock-solid. Why do you think they are waiting to release a single this long? Because no radio station will play it. Hicks will be the lowest selling Idol winner ever and simon’s comment to the girl chewing gum last week on AI to “stick it on Taylor’s face” sums up how much this man is doing for the Idol franchise- absolutely nothing. It’s pretty sad when your face is stuck behind a fern plant in the audition room and you won the last season.

Taylor’s CD is FAR better than Chris Daughtry’s. Chris is a Nickleback wanna-be and is the current flavor of the month – he’ll be gone within 3 years off the musical planet.

Taylor’s music is timeless and I predict will be around touring and recording for decades to come. He’ll be a steady seller through the years and I for one am looking forward to each and every album he puts out.

He’s a Gold and Platinum recording artist. Period. End of story. No one in their right mind is going to dig into exactly when it actually sold Gold/Platinum except for AI fanatics. He will eventualloy SELL platinum – this is not a sprint – it’s a marathon.

Taylor is the best thing EVER to come out of AI!

“stick it on Taylor’s face”, Simon is being caustic to the extreme this season. To refer a contestant to stick her chewing gum on the previous season’s winner, uncalled for; he can say he was simply joking around, but I’m doubting it was just a casual comment. I”ll have to check to see if the plant is still in front of Taylor’s image.

Regarding the platinum status, the reasons for reporting it so stands true for any musician announced as having achieved that mark. We’ll have to see how the single does in radio play.

    #58, nick states:

Responding to comments like the above is counterproductive. Following the example of Mr. Hicks, who by the way is well worth emulating as a strong, determined, loyal, humble, classy, talented gentleman and musician, we who love Taylor will just smile and continue to be enthralled by his vocal sounds and show contentment in the fact that we found our Idol ….he is genuine , not manufactured by the PTB.

Taylor is everything an American Idol should be.And they could take a lesson in CLASS from him to use on the show this year. The shows’ VIP’s and judges seem to have attended the Jerry Springer School of Entertainment since season 5 ended.

Jewel–Have to agree w/you.Taylor is “The Man” or “The Bomb” or whatever!!!!
Here’s what most people don’t get. Yes, Chris, Katherine, Ace, Elliot (and Bucky, but he’s great in his country niche) have really terrific voices, as does Taylor (do we remember when Simon said after Taylor sang “Something” We forget what a really, really good singer you are.

Simon also apologised for thinking Taylor would not make the finals. He said, “I was wrong.”

What I’m trying to say is as good as the other voices are, Taylor has something, the “it” that puts him way above the others. He’s in a class, a division all his own, and we are the luckier for it. Go Taylor. You are the BEST!!.

To all the Taylor naysayers – reporters especially…do yourself a favor and buy a ticket to his tour. This is an amazing entertainer who delivers more than is expected and will leave you begging for more. This show is brilliance. The band is spot on also.
