It sounds surreal but true and well deserved too, that Skillet’s latest album Awake has recently attained the milestone Gold Certification rating. This wouldn’t be their first time, having struck gold with Comatose back in 2006. Back then, they were considered lucky, but I reckon they’ve now earned the respect of hard rock lovers and broken some crucial barriers as well.
Comatose which featured effervescent hit singles like “Rebirthing” and “Comatose” and received international recognition, commanding multiple Grammy nominations plus two BMI Music Award wins for “The Last Night,” “The Older I Get,” and “Better than Drugs.” And let’s not forget the exuberant and thrilling anthemic ballad “Those Nights,” “Whispers In the Dark,” and others. Comatose showed Skillet’s punch and ability to convert non-hard rockers. The mixed variety of the personalities that make up this christian hard rock group has further helped its focus in making inspirational and yet edgy music.
As though Comatose was just a one-off; skeptics scoffed that things would soon dwindle for the rock group, till they got a rude shock when Awake hit the airwaves last August and climbed straight to the top of the charts!
Awake, has proved to be a blast; from its unusual album cover design down to every single track, including the underlying message each hit attempts to convey. In a nutshell, it is a follow up to the theme of Comatose. Until September 11, pretty much everyone’s been living in that deep state of delirium (Comatose), living in a bubble of fantasy. In otherwords, we’ve been spiritually ignorant, blind, and insensitive. We only woke up after lots of lives got wasted in the middle of that nightmare.
Forget about the anthemic blend of acoustic and percussive riffs or the head-banging, for a moment and reflect on the import of the lyrics. Skillet’s Awake is that attempt to stir us to the awareness of happenings around us. Awake is selection of deeply touching and provocatively arranged songs that calls everyone to take dominion over our inner demons unrelenting in their enslaving antics. Besides this is an invitation to waging a spiritual kind of war. Also an allegory to return to love, forgiving others in other to receive the Grace to be forgiven as well. These and other social issues were raised in Awake.
There’s never a dull moment in Awake! With the Hard hitting rock beats switching between the heavy tempo, to their thunder-storm themed beats, and soft rocking riffs, unforced head-banging is practically impossible. With twelve hit singles like: “Hero”, “Monster”, “Awake”, “Don’t wake me”, “Should’ve when you could’ve”, “Forgiven”, “One day too late”, “Lucy” and more.
With these earth rocking performances and spiritually inspirational lyrics, Skillet’s no doubt going to be around for quite a while, affecting lives for good!
